Windows 11
Hi guys. I recently got a new laptop with Windows 10 64-bit OS preinstalled, Version 2004. Anyway, Windows Update says that Windows 11 is ready to download and install. Is it worth upgrading to Windows 11? Main reason I am holding back is because my laptop did not come with a W10 OS USB or anything. Also, since my laptop has a Ryzen CPU, I have read online that W11 had some performance issues with it? Has that since been fixed in W11? Thoughts and help greatly appreciated :)

Holding off isn't a bad idea for a while. The issues with the AMD processors is being addressed and should be totally cleared up shortly. ATM, they are fixing it but some members are still reporting instability with their CPU's.

Purists would made an image backup of the OS (before you install any apps), then do a clean install Win 11 from a USB. Install user apps and any required manufacturer utilities after that. Periodic OS image backups are also essential.

In the unlikely event of a warranty claim on your PC you could restore the original image backup.

If you don't like Win 11 and addons cannot customize it to your liking you could restore the original Win 10 image copy. But you will be just putting off the inevitable upgrade to Win 11 (yes, I know there are some people still running XP).

Yeah lets all do that. Oh wait a minute - if we all do that bugs will not be found!

OP - A far better approach is to make an image backup of current installation, then upgrade and try it yourself, knowing you can safely revert if any issues.

Seems a good time to do it as 2004 seems a bit old, you can always roll back if you don't like it. Pretty much all initial problems are resolved.

I have upgraded four computers, including a laptop whose CPU didn't qualify for the update. No problems with any of them (just a warning from Microsoft on the one that didn't technically qualify).

Lovin it seriously. Had issues until last update as I am running AMD processors. But my experience in every way so far is great. Yeah there one or two gripes I have about the layout of the app/pinned apps window and my clock shows time and half of the date cause bottom half is buried.

IMHO, there is no compelling reason to go to 11 at this time. It has no new features that are worth the price of admission. (Which is zero, for an upgrade.)

I've done it on my two desktops anyway. Gotta maintain my enthusiast (nerd) cred.

@Skeet1983 The advantages outweigh the disadvantages. sadly you do get a lot of negative comments about 11
Well of course. There are not many of the billions of Windows 10 and probably hundreds of thousands of Windows 11 users out there who are going to join these forums just to post how great it is and they have no problems.

    Fast!
How about installing 11 on an old laptop first and trying it out before you decide? It'll install and run on just about anything if you burn the iso with rufus to remove the warnings about tpm, secure boot and processor generation.

I say that because it's - different. In my view it is faster and slicker - but in use, very different from Windows 10. I still find the start menu to be dumbed down and not satisfactory. I just want the shut down button directly above the start menu button!

That way you can keep your new laptop running smoothly on 10 while you try out 11. I have 11 installed on a 10" netbook if you've got one of those kicking around.

I also found it faster and slicker, a point that is seldom mentioned. I sorted the start menu with Explorerpatcher

Hi,
Faster is subjective snappy is the funniest term used for 11
10 is all that to and 10-11 are so much a like using dark mode the only difference you'd notice is the mac taskbar layout and changed for the worse start menu.
Otherwise 10 and 11 are the same in performance and looks on at least three systems lowest spec's machine is x99 6 core so snappy is what it's always been lol
10 does benchmark higher a couple benchmarks I've run so far I'll chalk that up to crappy early nvidia drivers on 11.
