15 minutes to boot up

I have a rarely used notebook that started taking 15 minutes to boot up. I just ran the Recovery-Reset so there's nothing installed yet. After Windows was reinstalled, I shut it down, then powered it up again as a test, but it's still taking 15 minutes to boot up. Where do I go from here? It's running Windows 11 with an HD.

15 minutes long for even HDD drive, i suggest you update BIOS firmware or check to see HDD failing also update the device drivers.

This may a lost cause. It's an HP 15-bstxx. Several years ago, an internal hinge broke and the lid cracked. I replaced it with a Dell, but jury rigged the HP with external hinges and a kickstand to hold the lid up. During my patch job, the battery stopped working too. All that said, it worked OK when plugged in and I have only used it as a 2nd computer for my wife when on vacation. Yesterday, I wanted to let it run the normal updates, but found it was now taking forever to boot up, and once booted up, it ran slow. I thought reinstalling Windows would fix it, but it didn't. Still too slow to boot up, a too painfully too low to use. I think the recycle bin is it it's future unless there is a simple fix to get it back up to speed.

That was a low-end laptop series released around 2017. It came with 4gb and 8 gb configurations of ram. Try setting the bios to default to see if improves boot time. Also make sure it has the most recent bios version loaded. As mentioned an ssd would be better but it's gonna take more than an ssd if boot time is 15 minutes.

Unless there is a hardware problem, you might consider loading one of the Linux distros to use it as a travel laptop. Mint Cinnamon or Ubuntu are my preferences. They're the most Windows-user friendly. If a Linux distro improves boot time, it beats chunking it.

Some peope benefited from the registry key entry "Serialize" when their bootup took too long. You may try it if you want.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Serialize]
"StartupDelayInMSec"=dword:00000000
"WaitForIdleState"=dword:00000000

You will create a registry key Serialize and create two dword (32-bit) registry values StartupDelayInMSec and WaitForIdleState with data 0 (zero).

You must log out and log back in to your user account after adding the registry key and its values.

You must be comfortable dealing with registry and be very careful when typing in the registry entries.

GOOD NEWS!!! Task Manager was showing mostly 100% disk usage all day yesterday and this morning. I suspect it was due to several updates that were taking endless hours to download and install, and one that had to be tried again. Once they were all done, disk usage went way down, and boot time dropped to 2 1/2 minutes and all the application became responsive again.
