Not all the drives, as they are all internal.
You should disconnect them and see what happens I've had some issues in the past when they are and I was trying to install Windows

I'm nervous about doing that because if the update installs and I reconnect the drives, then what if I can't boot? Also, it would make a clean install dangerous as well.
At least at the moment, if I get a failed update install, W11 reverts to my previous working build.

If it would fail you can install 10 over again. I've done this and never had an issue when I reconnected the other drives and it's recommended by Kari.

My other issue is that WU keeps downloading the update and nagging for a restart to install. Obviously, whenever I do that, I get into the failed update cycle again.
Is there any way to tell W11 to ignore this update?

Honestly.. I think you're better off staying with 10.
EDIT: and after you've installed 10 only use the release preview channel in the insider program.

Are you saying removing the Intel SATA drivers completely fixed it for you?
Yes, it didn't work with intel's SATA drivers. You probably have the option to backtrack to the Standard SATA Achi controller. I was able to do this by entering the device manager IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Click on it, choose to update driver. Select drivers on my computer. Select let me choose from a list of available drivers on my computer. Check "view compatible hardware" and you'll hopefully get the Standard SATA ACHI controller as an option.
Worth trying.

After several months of trouble free W11, I'm very reluctant to do that. Is there not a way of telling Windows to ignore this update?

Like I said.. when you install 10 just opt for the release preview if you opt into the insider program. You can do that or try the advice you've been given. Kari provided some great advice and his suggestions do work

The information you're supplying is rather vague.

I had very similar problem with any kind of upgrade install as the OP in the thread.
Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver (Sata/AHCI driver) was the problem for me.
With it installed Windows Update would not complete an install of the new build.
And trying to install it on a clean install of Windows 11 renders it unbootable upon reboot.

The only issues I had with RST was that it would detect the drive at boot. That's easily overcome though

Vague? I'm honestly not sure how much more I can say. I've explained the issue several times, I've followed all the advice in terms of posting log files, I've followed Kari's procedure, I've tried the suggested SATA driver solution, etc.
I've tried everything suggested here. What more detail would you like me to give? Very happy to do so if it will help.

I assume you mean that it wouldn't detect the drive.
Easily overcome would be nice. Do tell how.

Sorry if I wasn't clear in my previous post.
I had no luck with this as an upgrade to a previous install if RST had been installed.
Even reverting the RST driver to MS driver didn't work. Still the same failure upon reboot.
The only way I made this work was a clean install from a UUPdump created ISO on USB key.
And the only way to keep it working was to leave the MS standard sata driver alone.

Well.. As I said or implied the insider program might not be for you.
I'm not sure I get what direction you're taking in your replies. You say I'm being vague, although I can't see why you would say that, and I ask what further information you would like in order to help, and you reply saying this program might not be for me!
Sorry, but I'm confused. After several months, I am having my first real issue in the dev program, and I thought I would post here to see if anyone could help. I thought that is what these forums are for.
I have received lots of help, which I appreciate, but none of it has found what my issue is.
If there is any further detail you would like that has not already been supplied, then please just ask.

Have you tried the in-place upgrade? Have you tried to disconnect the internal drives,, other than the C?

What modifications have you made to say,, the registry?

When Nirisoft was ran what steps were made?

It also allows you to easily change a drive letter of USB devices and remote network shares, as well as to delete a drive letter of USB device that is not plugged. You can also use DriveLetterView to export the list of all drives into text/csv/html/xml file.

Have you tried the in-place upgrade? Have you tried to disconnect the internal drives,, other than the C?

What modifications have you made to say,, the registry?

Thanks. From previous posts, you can see that I have:
1) removed anti-virus
2) posted the setuperr.log from Panther
3) removed all peripheral devices. (Only haven't disconnected internal drives.)
4) disconnected from internet
5) ran a SFC scan
6) submitted a whole bunch of log files as requested earlier
7) followed Kari's procedure
8) tried an in-place install from the ISO from UUDump
9) tried an in-place install from the ISO modified by Kari's process
10) uninstalled Intel SATA drivers
11) BIOS is up to date
Other things that I can't remember. Unfortunately to no avail.
