Solved 24H2 Error

Trying to update to 24H2 but keep getting this error. Anyone know how to find out which driver or service is causing this error?

Pressing learn more takes me here Windows release health

depends on what programs you have installed. would have to sift through logs to track down which one. you could reboot in cleanboot and see if it'll run setup

While an active driver can cause this failure, so can an inactive one. Many times when a driver is updated, it leaves a copy of the old incompatible driver in driver store. Though not active, the upgrade process still sees it and sqwuawks about it. Or it can be an old driver for a piece of hardware/softwre you don't even use any more that was left behind. And yes, some softwares install code that somehow registers as a driver.

Not a rhetorical question: "kamalaggi" lists 23H2. Are there drivers that are OK with 23H2, but not 24H2?

If so, I hope it's not something in the Driver store. Getting rid of one of those is more difficult than it should be.

That I can not answer. I only know what happened to me way back at the beginning when MS scanned for drivers when I tried to enable core isolation. It was due to a very old driver still in driver store from Windows 10 for an external drive that had not been connected to my computer in a very long time.... wdsm64_prewin8.sys.
I used Driver Store Explorer to find and remove it.

One would think that if a driver was not in use, it wouldn't send 11 into a tizzy, but if Windows has a reason to scan driver store (which I know it does during an upgrade) and sees something in driver store it doesn't like, it balks. Whether it's in use or not seems to have no bearing on it.

I just looked at mine and there are 8 versions of my BT driver still in driverstore and I know I've updated my BT driver at least that many times. There were 4 old ones for my gpu, too. IMO a lot of this confusion could be stopped if old drivers where always removed when new ones are installed. What's to say at some point one of those old BT drivers won't jump up and be deemed incompatible by MS and cause an upgrade to fail. I fully understand that one is unable to roll back a driver if the old one has been removed, but jeesh, which is the lesser of 2 evils here.

Yes, it just dumps the entire Driver Store, its simply a wrapper around a Windows CLI tool called pnputil. In essence, Driver Store Explorer just does this:

Yes, @antspants it will. Click on select old drivers. It highlights the older issues. But even then, be really careful. I always eyeball for sure that the newer listed driver is the one being used by the device in device manager.. I like to play it as safely as I can.
For example today, after I got rid of all the old BT versions that were listed, I left it like this until I can dig into the driverstore myself. This doesn't look right to me as the same exact driver version that it's showing as older drivers multiple times is exactly what is currently assigned to my BT. Unless the driver is actually duplicated multiple times in driver store this might be one I need to leave alone.
