Solved 24H2 is awful

Beware of upgrading to 24H2 unless you really know you are going to like it.

I tried it (having first performed an image backup of my 23H2 system disk using Macrium Reflect 8) and didn’t like it, so restored the image backup to my system disk, only to then find out that the upgrade to 24H2 had silently installed Bitlocker and encrypted all three of my internal disk drives. Of course, I hadn’t been told what the encryption key was during the upgrade process, so the contents of all those disks was lost forever! Luckily, I had backups of the important stuff, so I could reformat the affected disks and restore from the backups – over 4 hours of unnecessary work!!!
An upgrade to 24H2 doesn't encrypt the disks unless you did a clean install using 24H2 media?
I went from 23H2 to 24H2 with no encryption, once using Windows Update and then doing a 24H2 > 24H2 repair install using an offical MS ISO (not Rufus-created). Nothing got encrypted.

MS account and TPM active during the installs

I installed 24H2 as a clean install to a machine that was previously running Linux, and it didn't enable BitLocker at all on my drives.

Does it have a TPM 2. That is a requirement for device encryption.

Yes, it supports TPM 2 via Intel PTT, which is enabled.

Edit: oh yeah, it's because I didn't use a Microsoft account.

there are literally millions of hardware / software combinations out there, so it is impossible to test even a small fraction of these.

What affects one person may not affect another. You can wait months and still not be sure YOUR combination will not cause issues
To elaborate on these excellent points...

One person's current combination of hardware and software may have issues with a particular update, but then if you do a fresh build with the same hardware and install your apps (up to date copies of the ones you still use), there's a very good chance everything will work just fine.

I'm not saying that one should be expected to go through all that with every update, but it's a next logical step when things don't go well. You can revert to an older image (if you have one) but be prepared for the same issues the next time you try the update (unless there's a replicable issue that's reported by many people and corrected in the next update).

I have not had any issues with 24H2.
sfc/scannow came out clean and I was able to remove windows.old plus clean the component store.
Used space of my windows drive is now the same that it was before the upgrade.

WOW, good thing I did some digging before updating and THANK-YOU for sharing this. What an absolute nightmare! When you mean internal drives, you mean all drives connected whether SATA or vNVME right? I have 6 8TB 870 QVO's at 90% capacity, I would have been beyond livid if Bitlocker encrypted all of them rendering all of that data lost! Has anyone else experienced this and has Micro$haft offered an explanation or statement regarding this? Looks like I will keep Windows Update Blocker enabled for the foreeable future. I also use Macrium Reflect and make weekly back-ups and was under the impression that if I tried 24H2 and didn't like it I could simply fall back to a recent 23H2 system image, I cannot believe Bitlocker encrypts all of your hard-drives without your consent nor knowledge and doesn't even give you the courtesy of telling you nor the encryption key!

What an absolute nightmare! Why is no-one else talking about this?! This is a BIG deal, a HUGE problem!

Although drives are marked as encrypted, the encryption is not activated. You still have to actually activate the encryption. A better term would be "device encrypted ready".

All you had to do was turn on the encryption when you could save keys to wherever you want as a backup. You do not need to wait for it to finish, and then you can turn it off - it is not obvious you have to turn it on to turn it off (no more illogical than you use the start button to stop pc),

It can take a few minutes for this to finish but certainly much less than 4 hours=,

Also device encryption automatically stores the keys in the TPM as well. It is a pre-requisite of device encryption you need a TPM unlike full bitlocker that does not actually need a TPM. So you would not have lost your data anyway.

So, really, you did do 4 hours of unnecessary work by not fully understanding how device encryption works (admittedly MS do not explain it well).

In simple terms, turn it on and then turn it off.
So you're saying that we should know to encrypt and then un-encrypt our hard-drives before attempting to update? How are we expected to know this? Where does MS tell you to do this before updating?

I have been watching sorry you went through issues; I tried to do a backup on external hard drive saw File explore error? before I get the 24H2 update I knew was going to be an issue. I saw TWO D drives when there should be one. Backup said there was an issue it could not find the drive; I could see why if there were TWO. I asked forum how to fix one person (Brink) sent a tutorial how to fix it. I tried it work. As for your other issues try using Copilot it's been a wealth of information too me. You may ask how to fix other issues. Me I would get 24H2 to work there has to be good stuff on the other side.

The karmic irony of this topics - hundreds if not thousands of them all over the internet - and yet, a self-proclaimed expert was spamming gaslighting lies in a topic about Linux - till the topic end-up closed - while triggering so many people, as in: while surrounded by so many Windows related complaints/bugs/issues/reports - especially the current update - where even advanced Windows users struggle/d with all kinds of scripts and terminal lines to make something work (sometimes taking months to find a functional solution) - he kept spamming the most ludicrous BS:

- claiming that Windows is for average users capable of only a point and click experience (no complications with terminal, registry and other stuff like that)"

-claiming that being so familiar with Windows 11 he can solve any Windows issue within seconds or minutes (not like Linux where he has to google for answers"

- claiming that Windows brakes only when trying new things and you don't know what you're doing (as if Updating Windows is different every time and takes a PHD in computer science)

- claiming that Windows users are afraid to open Command Prompt (terminal) or PowerShell

...and so on and so forth (even opens couple of topics himself asking for basic questions) - as if Evelevenforum has a feature which filters all negative comments about Windows (no such thing obviously), just pure gaslighting lies or trolling - triggering anyone in that topic who had eyes to see.

Been dabbling with Windows on a professional level since mid 2000 (sales, tech support & maintenance, servicing) - but also worked as admin (sort of) at a net club in mid '90s and Windows was always a carousel ride - with ups and downs depending on what you're doing or how compatible was/is every piece of hardware/device. Starting with Windows 11 - even Microsoft made it official that intends to brake support for older hardware - which started happening with 24H2. Not surprising in the leastest (BY NOW - after that long carousel ride of ups and downs) - even officially supported hardware has issues, tho - as can be seen in many topics about 24H2 opened on elevenforum alone - this update/upgrade is a big mess in all kinds of ways. Which again, even advanced users - struggle to solve. With Linux on the other hand, had a different experience - more negative in the beginning - while lately and for couple of years now was mostly a smooth ride. Not to mention - some of the most complicates Windows issues i encountered (some Windows update braking the system of so many clients - while every OEM adopted the stupidest partitioning trend - of formatting an SSD/HDD without creating extra partitions) - was so easily solvable with a almost any Linux Desktop Live CD/USB. Seriously, don't remember the last time i encountered some major issues with a Linux based OS - and don't have a back-up for neither of those systems - while with Windows - backing-up Windows before every update should be a mandatory tutorial lesson for every Windows users, cause.... "you never now".

So hey, i'm good with 23H2 - at least till 2025 and recommend anyone to do the same.
