Solved C: drive running out of space


Maybe just get minitool partition magic create however many gigs you from the E you need to fit programs ON THE c: DRIVE and then using the amount of storage you need extend the C Drive you need.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I finally got around to this... I think I made an image and a bootable USB .
I think I got the boot setup USB working.
After I started the PC, I plugged in the 500GB ext. HDD (F:) and see it reads 465GB total size and 401 GB free .
My C: drive I thought I imaged says 103GB total and that is mostly full.
any thoughts about the new F: drive not having near 100GB ?

500 GB is the decimal figure, 465 GB is the binary value. 465x1024x1024x1024 = 500 GB. How is the drive formatted?

Your image included your Windows OS, third party apps and any personal User Files (ie) Desktop, Downloads, Pictures, Documents etc.
Windows 11 without any 3rd party apps and user files can be 20 to 25 GB in size. Include all the rest and it can be as large as 100 GB.

so I'm guessing the image is ok, that it was compressed some ?
probably change out the SSD tomorrow. I'm also guessing if the new SSD and image don't work out tomorrow , I would just put the old one back in and give it another try .
If I try to boot without my USB , will the boot manager just pick up the next boot option and boot ?

typically Macrium Reflect will compress to an image file that's 60%-70% of the size of the used data on the drives being imaged.

so, my USB is not booting the desktop. :(
a couple questions ... secure boot on or off ? If it's enabled it will not let me enable Legacy.
With it disabled it still won't let me enable Legacy because of PTT is on. Do I need Legacy to be enabled ?
Boot manager , on or off ?
The boot seq. is UEFI:USB
under boot list option it is set now at UEFI
when I enter to boot from USB , I get a blue screen asking about my keyboard layout, after enter it's asking where to boot from.
when I choose UEFI:USB I get the Dell logo and a few seconds later it goes back to the blue keyboard screen.
what am I missing ?

With PTT + secure boot disabled , Legacy enabled , I had a couple other choices to boot from.
I tried both from ext.USB and UEFI USB , and got the window pane , not the Dell logo... but it went to another blue screen with options of repair, revert and some others. I tried a couple ways but still did not boot up.

thought I would give it a go with the new ssd in place.
Tried booting from USB a couple of ways, and I can get to troubleshoot adavanced and tried system image recovery but it showed no dvd or media image found . .. I had the external HDD plugged in.

Would paying for the newer version of Macrium be beneficial to someone like me for more guidence ?

There isn't really any benefit to the Paid version of Macrium Reflect other than creating new images with more bells and whistles.

If the HDD mode of your computer was MBR and not UEFI Bios,. when you created the Macrium Reflect Image,
You would need to Initialize the USB Flash drive as MBR not GPT for UEFI Bios.
And You would need to add CSM/Legacy boot to the Bios of your Computer in addition to UEFI Bios.

When you choose the one time Boot menu with your MBR Initialized Flash Drive in. Under CSM/Legacy Boot, It will list a USB (flash) Drive by manufacturer, not UEFI USB drive.

I got a bit lost with all this, but if wanting to replace the C drive for a bigger SSD then personally I'd have gone the route of getting an external SSD/NVME enclosure and cloning the C drive onto that and swapping out the ssd for the cloned one.

So, does that mean you solved your issue?

The easiest cleanest way to do this is a Clean Install of Windows 11.

After installing, connect your old previous C: drive via the USB Enclosure.
Restore your User Files from that drive to the new Windows Install.
Then install any of your 3rd party apps.

That sounds easy too - just back up files from the c drive, clean install and restore files.
