Solved Cannot download and install KB5008353

I am running Windows 11 on an older machine with unsupported hardware and in Settings / Update there is an update KB5008353 which will not download and install and it shows an error 0x80073701. Now when I check out that error it seems to be linked to Windows 10?? so I am wondering just what is going on.
Any ideas really appreciated.

Try manually installing the update. Go here Microsoft Update Catalog to download it.
If that doesn't work there may be corruption within Windows update. Reset the windows update components.
Open an administrative command prompt. Run each of the following commands and hit enter after each line. (You can copy them from here and paste them into command prompt window)

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver

Restart computer after reset update components completed and check for updates..
If that doesn't work, at admin command type SFC /Scannow

I just noticed you had a similar thread on another update 1/17. Did you follow @zbook recommendation to reset windows update components then?

No I just noticed this thread and thought it might be worth a go as it is just something that is going to be hard to find out what the problem is. I might just try your suggestion first.

Ok Zbook I will have to try that tomorrow as I have to go offline until then. Just as a by the by I did remove some Windows.old files that were probably the initial install of 10 before I did the install on an unsupported hardware version. So far the updates have been just been downloading and installing - it just seems to be the odd cumulative ones that stall and I did think of doing a fresh install to see if I could get rid of some corrupted files that the troubleshooter said there was. But I will do as you say tomorrow.

It can run overnight once it has been downloaded.
The download takes approximately one minute.

It must have internet access though.
So you can run it tomorrow.

If all else fails, try a windows repair install. That should fix things up for you. Sometimes it really is the only way to get things straightened out and you won't lose anything this way. I know it is a pain.

Download the ISO disk image if you just want to refresh/repair your operating system:

Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO): Download Windows 11

Installation instructions (ISO):

If you want to install Windows 11 directly from the ISO file without using a DVD or USB flash drive, you can do so by mounting the ISO file. This will perform an upgrade of your current operating system to Windows 11.
To mount the ISO file:
- Go to the location where you downloaded the ISO file. Then, right-click the ISO file and select Properties.
- On the "General" tab, click "Change…" where it says, “Opens with:" and select Windows Explorer for the program you would like to use to open ISO files and select Apply.
- Right-click the ISO file and select Mount.
- This will create a “virtual” bootable disc. Double-click on it to view the files within. Double-click setup.exe to start Windows 11 setup.

Ok Brian I have given up and am just ignoring that particular update as it seems to be one for Windows 10 which leave me wondering why Windows 11 put it out as an update for it. I am just happy as long as I get the security updates for as long as they are coming through as I am running 11 on unsupported hardware. The OS as far as I am concerned is more or less like Windows 10 for what I want. When the support runs out then I shall swap back to the Windows 10 drive I have in the machine and then save up for a new machine but it will not be the same as my old Ivy Bridge machine that as I have said many times I spent so much money and effort in building and has a lot more features in it than anything I can buy right now. Just annoys me (and probably a great number of people) that it will create so much eco waste of the old machines.
In fact I am trying out Linux Mint on my old Sandy Bridge build right now and apart from I cannot find a version of my favourite security software (Eset) to run on it - has turned out to be really more user friendly than when I tried it out many years ago.

I had a similar issue with an update that refused to install. In the end, I had to do a repair install with an in-place upgrade.
If you get the latest ISO, you may be able to have KB5008353 included.

Ok Zbook mate it will not run either of those links you attached the zip file one I opened and got a message from Microsoft to say do not run.

I might try a little software program called WUreset to see what it can do. Reset Windows Update Tool

No that didn't work either, I might just leave as is as I assume that Microsoft will soon drop the sword on unsupported hardware and I am still getting the security updates at least.

All bat files display the warning do not run.

They need the manual override.
