Cannot download large files from Edge

Hello!

The last couple of days I have a weird bug with Microsoft Edge. When I try to download a large file (one minute or more), it stops with an error message that there is some network issue and couldn't download the file. If I click on the small triangle at the right it resumes download and it fails after a few seconds. For files of several MB such as a driver I have to click on the small triangle several times until I can finally download the file. I tried the same download in Mozilla Firefox, it doesn't have any issue, the download completes without any delay or being interrupted. What is wrong with Edge? How can I fix it? The problem occurs in my main computer (see 2nd system specs), I have installed all the latest Windows Updates, Edge is updated to the latest version. I cannot currently restart my PC and see if the issue fixes because it is rendering some damaged video trying to fix it and takes too many hours. When I have the chance I will restart it. Any ideas what this might be?

As a test try to relocate the downloads folder to a different drive, see if it helps, then move the folder back to the default and test again. Make sure the folder has no files in it you want to keep before moving it.

I normally use Firefox and rarely use Edge.
I could have written the same post as you with the browser names reversed.
I keep meaning to find out more about so-called 'download managers' but it's never risen up high enough in my priority list [which still includes some jobs I failed to compete on 31st May 1989].

If the reboot or folder change doesn't resolve it, try the troubleshooting Internet Connections wizard. You can also Reset Edge to defaults.

For some files Firefox fails too, but then it resumes and completes download when I click to resume. It is not like Edge that fails multiple times. I restarted but Edge still has difficulty downloading. I am afraid I should check for malware.

By any chance, is the file being downloaded larger than 4GB and are you trying to save it to a destination formatted with FAt32?

No it was a file about 200MB and was from Microsoft's site. Could their site have a problem? I will try to download something else from another site tomorrow...

It looks like the bug is gone. I downloaded some files from other sites (not Microsoft) and they were not interrupted. I will confirm before I mark the thread solved.

After several Windows updates, the bug persisted, every time I tried to download a large file (such as latest nVidia drivers), I got the message that couldn't download due to network issue, I searched with this error message in Google and found this site: Couldn't Download - Network Issue on Edge The Internet Troubleshooter found no issues, so I tried the commands and restarted. It seems my issue is now solved. I just copy the code just in case. Search for cmd and Run as Administrator. Copy-paste these commands and then restart your computer:

That code turns off File & printer sharing on private networks.
I think it's the first line that does it.

After trying to download the latest nVidia driver again to test it, the issue persisted. I went to Device Manager and examined my MediaTek RT5379 USB wireless adapter. There were three drivers available, one from Microsoft and two from MediaTek. The MediaTek drivers where one version in 2015 and a newer in 2017. I had installed the 2015 version. I manually replaced it with the 2017 version. Bingo! The issue was solved! I resumed the nVidia driver download which completed without any other error message. In case anyone experiences the same issue, try updating your network drivers.

PS: While the Microsoft driver could also work, I prefer the MediaTek one to get the maximum possible performance.

Hello! I haven't tried Free Download Manager or anything yet since I didn't have the time. However I yesterday installed all Windows updates up to build 22621.2506 (last for 22H2) and then the 23H2 enablement package from the link of the respective thread. My PC is now running Windows 11 23H2 build 22631.2506. I decided to download the Windows 11 23H2 ISO from Microsoft's site just in case I need to do an in-place upgrade/repair or clean install Windows 11 23H2 on another computer. Sure enough after downloading some MB of the ISO the download was interrupted with the infamous "Network error" message. But when I resumed the download it was not interrupted again and completed! This is some progress, so I decided to post about it. So anyone running Windows 11 22H2 having the same issue, just install all the Windows updates to goat build 22621.2506 and then install the 23H2 enablement package to upgrade at 23H2 (no compatibility check is done, so no hack needed for unsupported PCs).

PS: Since the issue is not entirely fixed I will not mark solved yet.

Oops I spoke too soon. It downloaded the English ISO without second interruption because I was using the computer locally and the download speed did not exceed 1200KB/sec. Today that I am accessing my computer remotely and I also tried to download Java at the same time it was interrupted several times. I believe this is because of my cheap USB wireless dongle that cannot handle higher speeds than about 1200KB/sec. So I will download FDM and see if it can limit the bandwidth to avoid dropouts.

PS: I am now trying downloading the Greek ISO again with FDM and traffic speed limited to 1500KB/sec. Let's see...

OK, it seems FDM did the job by limiting the download speed. However I would prefer to fix my issue than bypass it. Thank you all anyway.
