Besides, a legitimate retail key shouldn’t involve the company selling it to stress that you download and activate as soon as possible, and that support isn’t available if you didn’t do as requested (within 30 days).

You don't activate Office with these keys!
You Register the key on your MS account, download the iso, install Office, sign in with your MS account. Done.

That doesn’t work in Australia. At least never has for me.
Activation can only be done by entering a key when Word or any other app from Office 2021 is opened.

Stack social, in my opinion, sells Volume license keys, like everyone else.
I had it out with them once, they didn’t and wouldn’t deny it and kept diverting the email conversation.

Both of the Win11 Pro keys I got from Stack Social are retail keys. I actually searched for retail keys and that's what they are.

The only problem I've experienced has been when a key I bought was already activated when I tried. The weird thing is it seemed to activate OK. It only showed up in an hour or so when I tried to change some personalization settings I'd previously made but it wouldn't let me because it wasn't activated. Each time, though, I contacted the seller and they sent me another one that went through activation OK. I've been using the systems for several years now.

The keys I got are retail keys too. Surprised me since I figured they'd be OEM keys, which at this discount is not a problem should I have to change motherboard. For that matter, transferring a retail license is enough of a PITA I probably won't even bother if I need to.

EU made the law, that licenses from old PCs can be reused.
MS has no way of knowing from the licence originates.
Thus all cheap activable licenses are legitimate.
You can buy and activate a licence anywhere.

P.S. MS makes money from subscriptions, not from licenses, it is an old concept. You can use a trial 11 for free forever.
For the record, I bought dozens of cheap licenses, Pro licence for $15 from MS store directly. None was ever deactivated.

You pays your munny and takes your chances. Most of my keys are taken from old authentic Windows I used in the past but occasionally I will purchase a key when I don't have one handy. I've had a few fail on me since and I've even had a few authentic ones fail on me largely due to hardware changes. Not sure if MS has this anymore but there was a way to authenticate via telephone where you were given a whole series of numbers to punch in on your phone to validate your installation. This worked very well for me, but this method was also used with licenses that I paid for directly from the Windows Store.

I had to use the web based activation for my upgrade from Win-11 Home to Win-11 Pro two months ago. It was a minor pain in the ars for me because I did not know what it was talking about when it asked for the product ID numbers (eight 6-diget numbers) . . . once I knew what that was, it was clear sailing. Ive never seen a product ID number before. Google AI to the rescue.

I remember once having to go through that raindance, I think it was in the Windows 7 days. I swapped the motherboard since my original croaked, and it was quite a PITA to finally get the new configuration "approved".

My approach is different to most of the users in this thread and has turned out to be very cost effective and legitimate.

In 2009 I purchased a retail license for Windows 7 Professional direct from Microsoft here in New Zealand. It cost me $NZ220. That license is still in use today on my current desktop PC running Windows 11 25H2. That means the same license has been used legitimately in 4 computers for 17 years. The last time I had to interact with MS to transfer the license was via a dialog box during the upgrade to Windows 10 Professional in 2015.

Every time I've either built a replacement PC, upgraded components or completed a clean reinstall I've never had to reactivate the license manually (apart from the upgrade to Windows 10) or contact MS for any help. And I haven't paid MS a single cent since 2009. The license has never been used on multiple computers simultaneously.

The retail license has been linked to my personal MS account from the start. So, it's been 17 years $220 divided by 17 years means a cost of $12.94 per annum so far.

Well, we have a total of six Windows computers in my household, so that math doesn't work nearly as well for me! Truthfully, I could have probably saved a few bucks over the years by better managing the licensing. However, after spending around $3K on my newest computer build, saving another $10 really didn't seem that important! My secondary "backup" machine, also a new build, was another $1500, much of it for the disk storage. The "cost per annum" issue was a lot more important for me nixing buying something like Office 365 and paying $100 each year, that 's worth considering! :lmao:

Really good points. There are many different use cases, what I've done works for me, but isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea.

I got win7 pro retail keys from the microsoft £25 deal many years ago I think it was 2009. They did the same deal for win 8 in 2012 and I also got some then.
