Check for updates starts immediately on selecting Windows Update

In Windows 10, there is a clear option 'Check for Updates'.
In Windows 11, this seems to be missing.

Surely that's wrong... or I hope I am.. (it's currently downloading so can't recheck that for a while)

That's the way it is on my Win 11 Home.
I use WAU Manager to avoid that.

I don't even open WU any more.

What is MS thinking? I'm increasingly wondering .. Another thing I can't find - the range of group policies I'm familiar with for WU in Win 10.. defer, notify...

It's pretty much an indictment of MS if we're forced to go 3rd party from the outset.

Windows Update will automatically check for updates once a day. This is the same for W11 and W10. On a W10 machine that hasn't been used in the last 24 hours then a check for updates will also start immediately on selecting Windows Update, as seen on this machine that hadn't been turned of for a few days.

When up to date, both Windows 10 and Windows 11 behave the same, showing a manual 'Check for updates' button.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

Thev same policies are still there, but in a new location. The tree for Administrative Templates has been rearranged to have a more sensible structure. For example, what on earth was the relevance to consumers of the 'Windows Update for Business' category in W10's gpedit?

I have, it's always missing while a check is taking place or while an update is ready to download. And with several W10 machines to choose from I always have at least one that hasn't been used for a while, so an automatic 'check' takes place as soon as I open Settings at Update & Security.

Disconcerting behaviour if all you wish to do, say, is to view Update History and you use that route to try to get there.
(Granted e.g. Winkey + s, Update History, gets there directly).
