Recently (from the Command Prompt), I've tried getting Windows to do a chkdsk c: /f /r /x scan on reboot.

It gives me a message, asking me if I want to press a key to skip within about ten seconds, otherwise it will proceed to the scan. I wait for it to start, but it doesn't. Instead it fails and goes to my log-in screen.

Any ideas what could be causing this please ?

Thank you.

Please boot your computer with Windows Setup Media and from Windows Recovery Environment start the Command Prompt.

Please type below command into Command Prompt and press Enter key.

Following command will fix errors on the disk and locates bad sectors and recovers readable information.

Code:
Chkdsk C: /r

Please replace partition letter C: with Windows installed partition letter. When the computer boots into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) environment, the drive letter assign to Windows partition may not be C: drive letter because Windows 7, 8 , 8.1, 10 and Windows 11 creates a separate system partition when it's installed from scratch. The system partition contains boot files WinRE assigns the system partition the C: drive letter and the Windows installed partition will be assigned any other drive letter, usually D: drive letter is assigned to Windows installed partition. The Bcdedit | find "osdevice" command can be used to find out the drive letter of the Windows installed partition, the output of the Bcdedit command is similar to this osdevice partition=D:. The drive letter after partition= is the drive letter of the Windows partition.

Download official installation media like ISO image from Microsoft, same as your edition (Home, I suppose) and make the bootable USB drive, either by MS instructions or use an alternative tool like Rufus. In any case, you should be able to boot from USB drive like for system installation, but instead of installation or repair you need to start the Command prompt.

It is Windows Home.

This will be a first for me, so I'll have to see how it goes. I may need to ask questions.

Thank you though.

I've just had a look at that link, and noticed that it is for the US. Is there one for GB UK please, or does it not make any difference ?

Thanks again.

Chkdsk C: /r
If that is a SSD the /r switch is not necessary as SSD manage bad sectors automatically through the controller.
You would just be subjecting the SSD to excessive writes and doing something the SSD already handles on it's own.

Only part of chkdsk you ever need on a SSD is maybe chkdsk /f

Not really but just get the international iso if you are concerned.

I encountered a similar chkdsk issue several months ago and resolved it by relocating or removing the winsetupmon.sys file in C:\Windows\System32\drivers. I initially chose to relocate the file so it could be restored if any issues arose. This method successfully corrected the problem on four different computers.

Before proceeding, open an elevated command prompt and run: fltmc filters. If WinSetupMon appears in the list, the driver is active.
