Classic Shell Returns For Windows 11 (with and/or without) ExplorerPatcher installed

Exactly. Of course we can adapt to Windows 11 start menu, but I hate when I have to scroll tens of applications to find the one I want to launch. Classic Shell or Open Shell saves you this trouble by displaying the most recent applications you used. Search for an application also is not convenient if you don't remember the exact name and especially when you use the computer without a physical keyboard (I use my laptop with a wireless mouse and on-screen keyboard when watching movies on TV). It is far easier to click on the start button and then click on the application you want, rather than scroll or search for it. Common sense.

And it's not just the start menu programs. I use Agent Ransack to search for stuff, cos the Windows search function is slower than a week in jail. I use TeraCopy instead of the default Windows copy cos it's just better.
Yeah, even with a fast NVMe SSD there's no denying that Windows Search is still painfully slow in spite of the fact that Microsoft did make it less slow than how it used to be a very long time ago. You can play with the indexer's settings also including the advanced settings all you want, if you have lots of files and folders that you want to search through, then you can never get Windows Search to run fast enough to be able to use it to complete many different search jobs within any reasonable period of time. And that is regardless of whether you set Windows Settings | Privacy & security | Searching Windows | Find my files ➜ Classic. Look. There's that funny word again. If you change it to Enhanced the green progress bar in File Explorer becomes more conservative than the State of Colorado so, been using this since the early days of Windows 7:

I use a Logitech K800 Wireless Illuminated keyboard so I never need the on-screen keyboard, but I also use a Logitech G402 Hyperion Fury mouse with a USB extension cable because, just like the famous-old MX518 that I used to have, it "slides well". :D

You have to remember, just because you do something one way doesn't necessarily mean any other way is wrong. Neither that the others didn't think of your way. Of course we did, but we find our way more convenient.

@valinet implemented an interesting mechanism to prevent crashes after updates :

When Windows is updated, it may fundamentally change the layout and
functionality of `explorer`'s internal data structure. Since
ExplorerPatcher intensively patches those in order to deliver its
functionality, it may lead to `explorer` crashing when it performs
these modifications while being unaware (outdated) of the latest OS
changes. The worst scenario is when the crashes happen when `explorer`
starts up (for example, when the user logs in), and could cause the
user to experience an endless loop of `explorer` crashes, and leave
him/her unable to practically use the computer.

In order to mitigate this scenario, when `explorer` starts up as the
shell, ExplorerPatcher increments a counter stored in the registry.
After a predefined timeout (by default, 10 seconds), ExplorerPatcher
will reset the counter to 0. If `explorer` crashes during this period,
the counter will not be reset. When `explorer` restarts, the cycle
repeats. If the counter reaches a predefined value (by default, 3),
instead of starting up again normally (and very probably crashing
again), ExplorerPatcher will display a message window informing the
user about what is happening, offering a few suggestions on how to
proceed next and disable its entire functionality until the next
File Explorer restart, in order to give the user a chance to perform
maintenance on the machine.

James,

The fact that Windows 11 calls itself Windows 10 still in that Registry entry has been happening ever since Windows 11 was released.
There is no sign of MS correcting this anomaly.

Your OpenShell is merely reading & repeating what it finds in that entry so I think it likely that you would have to alter the value yourself after every reboot.

Denis

Windows 11 is an update of Windows 10 and despite the rewriting of some code, the core is still Windows 10.

Of all the choices, which one reduces most reliably the taskbar's height (the default Win 11 taskbar is unacceptably too high/thick). That's my #1 desire for looking for alternatives

I use EP already. Problem is you have to babysit it a lot.

I have to remove EP just to update Windows (the major monthly Windows update) — then subsequently reinstall EP fresh all over again every month just to operate my PC. With all due respect that's too much work. I don't like manually preoccupying myself with updates. That's one area that should be left for automation.

Why don't you update EP first and then install Windows updates? This works for me, I never had any issue.
