General Create Elevated Shortcut without UAC prompt in Windows 11

  • Staff
Elevated_shortcut_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to create a shortcut of an elevated task to run an app as administrator without getting a UAC prompt for your account in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

When you open an application file with Run as administrator, you will get a UAC prompt by default for approval before the app is allowed to run with elevated rights.

In addition, Windows will not allow elevated apps to run at startup by default.

If you want to run an app as administrator (elevated) without getting a UAC prompt or at startup, then you can create an elevated task using the steps below to run the application as a workaround to do so.

You must be signed in as an administrator to create and use this elevated shortcut.

Here's How:

1 Open Task Scheduler (taskschd.msc).

2 Click/tap on Task Scheduler Library in the left pane of Task Scheduler, and click/tap on Create Task in the right Actions pane. (see screenshot below)

create_elevated_shortcut_without_UAC-1.png

3 In the General tab, type a name (ex: "Windows Terminal (Admin)") you want for this task, and type an optional description of the task. (see screenshot below)

Make note of this task name. You will need to know it in step 8 and when you create a shortcut of this task in step 13 below.

create_elevated_shortcut_without_UAC-2.png

4 In the General tab, check the Run with highest privileges box. (see screenshot below)

create_elevated_shortcut_without_UAC-3.png

5 In the General tab, select Windows 10 in the Configure for drop down menu. (see screenshot below)

You would select Windows 10 even for Windows 11.

create_elevated_shortcut_without_UAC-4.png

6 Click/tap on the Actions tab, and click/tap on the New button. (see screenshot below)

create_elevated_shortcut_without_UAC-5.png

7 Type cmd.exe in the Program/script field. (see screenshot below)

This is what is being used to open the elevated shortcut from, so it cannot be changed to anything else.

create_elevated_shortcut_without_UAC-6.png

8 Type the command below into the Add arguments field, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

/c start "Task Name" "Full path of application file"

Substitute Task Name in the command above with the task name (ex: "Windows Terminal (Admin)") you used in step 3 above.

Substitute Full path of application file in the command above with the actual full path of the application file you want to run as administrator. If this is for an app included in Windows (ex: "Windows Terminal (Admin)"), then you can just enter the .exe file name (ex: "wt.exe") for the app. If this is for an installed 3rd party app, then you will need to enter the full file path.

For example: /c start "Windows Terminal (Admin)" "wt.exe"

create_elevated_shortcut_without_UAC-7.png

9 You will now see this new action listed. (see screenshot below)

create_elevated_shortcut_without_UAC-8.png

10 Click/tap on the Conditions tab, uncheck the Start the task only if the computer is on AC power box, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

create_elevated_shortcut_without_UAC-9.png

11 You will now see this new task (ex: "Windows Terminal (Admin)") listed in the Task Scheduler Library. You can now close Task Scheduler if you like. (see screenshot below)

create_elevated_shortcut_without_UAC-10.png

12 Right click or press and hold on your desktop, click/tap on New, and click/tap on Shortcut.

13 Type the command below into the location field, and click/tap on Next. (see screenshot below)

schtasks /run /tn "Task Name"

Substitute Task Name in the command above with the task name (ex: "Windows Terminal (Admin)") you used in step 3 above.

For example: schtasks /run /tn "Windows Terminal (Admin)"

create_elevated_shortcut_without_UAC-11.png

14 Type a name (ex: "Windows Terminal (Admin)") you want for this shortcut of the task, and click/tap on Finish. (see screenshot below)

create_elevated_shortcut_without_UAC-12.png

15 Right click or press and hold on the new shortcut on your desktop, and click/tap on Properties.

16 Click/tap on the Change Icon button in the Shortcut tab. (see screenshot below)

create_elevated_shortcut_without_UAC-13.png

17 Click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

create_elevated_shortcut_without_UAC-14.png

18 Click/tap on Browse, navigate to and select the application (exe) file you want to run as administrator, click/tap on Open, select the icon you want for the shortcut, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshots below)

You can use any icon you want for this shortcut.

create_elevated_shortcut_without_UAC-15.png

19 Click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

create_elevated_shortcut_without_UAC-16.png

20 You can run at startup, Pin to Taskbar, Pin to Start, add to Start menu All apps, assign a keyboard shortcut to, or move this elevated shortcut to where you like for easy usage.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

Unfortunately, I can't seem to do this correctly with the 19 steps.

Can you provide illustrations/sample for a common search application like Everything. The additional steps like cmd.exe, entering or not entering quotes, accessing uncharted territory like the Task Scheduler library is causing my brain to hurt. I can't keep up with the other commands as well as there are way many steps involved.

You will always need to enter cmd.exe at step 7 to have the command in step 8 run in a command prompt.

The quotes will need to be in the command like in the example note box under step 8.

What's the task name you're using and the full path of the Everything app's exe file?

I'll post back with the command you should use in step 8 to help.

Hi Brink,

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I actually need help with the entire process. I am very uncomfortable going into the task scheduler and the instructions have too many steps. It leaves me very overwhelmed. And I have too many [safe] applications that I would like the UAC prompt disabled for.

I was hoping you could create a script, batch file or something similar where the user just points/selects the appropriate .exe file and then the automated process does the rest.

I also think it would be helpful if you can provide a sample with another non-windows application, like Everything.exe or any "random.exe" non-windows file that is within C:\Program Files (x86) or C:\Program Files.

It looks harder than it actually is. All the steps are there to help make it easier to follow along them to create the elevated task.

If wanted, you could give it a try for one with our help to see how you do.

It looks harder than it actually is. All the steps are there to help make it easier to follow along them to create the elevated task.

If wanted, you could give it a try for one with our help to see how you do.
Hi Brink,

I noticed you modified the instructions in October since my post back in May.

The instructions don't mention if we must or should use cmd.exe in step 7. It would be helpful to add some "other" real world examples such as "Everything.exe" (saved in "C:\Program Files\Everything\Everything.exe") or a "bat" file saved on the desktop that needs to be executed with the highest privileges (in Admin mode).

Thanks for posting this, Brink. It's more efficient than the method we've been using, as it eliminates the "Do you want to allow this App to make changes to your device" prompt, and it helped work around what (after doing some research) appears to be a bug in Windows 11.
The issue took a while to resolve, so in case anyone encounters the same, here's what happened and what I did to fix it:
  • Background:
> Set a shortcut for Windows Powershell ISE to always run elevated - with the UAC prompt.
> In the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Windows PowerShell\Windows PowerShell ISE.lnk shortcut: Properties --> Advanced --> check box to Run as Administrator

  • The Issue:
> Afterwards, running SFC/Scannow as part of our monthly maintenance routine showed "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."
  • Steps taken for resolution:
> C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log showed several file hash mismatch errors for Powershell ISE vs. the Windows Store.
> Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth reported that everything was fine. I ran SFC again, but got the same result.
> Running Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth did show an issue (I forget the output).
> Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth hung while running for several minutes at 62.3% :eek1:, then completed, showing it found errors and corrected them.
> Running SFC/Scannow again showed "Source Protection did not find any integrity violations".
Afterwards, launching Powershell ISE from the shortcut opened the app, but not as elevated. Checking the shortcut, I found "Run as Administator" had been unchecked!
  • Re-creation:
> Being a glutton for punishment, I re-checked the box, then ran SFC/Scannow. Curiously, this time it reported that it had found errors and corrected them. Once again, "Run as Administator" in the shortcut showed the box unchecked!

Note: setting the "Run as Administrator" checkbox in shortcuts for Powershell 7, VS Code, and Windows Terminal all worked fine, so the issue appears to be isolated to Powershell ISE (of course running anything elevated potentially exposes the PC to risks, so use judiciously.)

I know it's a very specific case, but I hope this helps someone!

Hello Sammy, :shawn:

You would indeed still use "cmd.exe" in step 7. This is what opens the command prompt to run the command specified in step 8.

Hi Brink,

Thanks for the clarification.

I'm still unclear how to add/execute a non-system application using the tutorial (if it's possible)?

In other words, open an EXE application (non-system), say, from "C:\Program Files\RandomNamedirectory\Anyapplication.exe" without needing to right-click, "run as admin", which is what I must do now for .bat files. There's no way around that which I found for actual non-[system] windows applications such as "Anyapplication.exe".

I'd like to be able to double-click on any shortcut and have the application run in Admin mode without any prompt.

You really don't want to use an elevated account for everyday usage since everything would always run with elevated rights (run as administrator). This could be a security risk if something (ex: malware) tries to run elevated without getting a UAC prompt to approve first.

For that app, you could use this in step 8:

/c start "App Name" "C:\Program Files\RandomNamedirectory\Anyapplication.exe"

sfc /scannow will restore the original ownership and permissions for Windows files which were installed.
That's part of its job, besides replacing corrupted or missing files.
