Decent 1-step cd ripper and tagger

Hi folks
Is there a decent Windows CD ripper that gets info directly from the CD so can "self tag" in 1-step and rip to flac
I'm using k3b currently which works brilliantly - but I want to run a windows app on a windows laptop. I've still 100's of audio CD's I want to rip before I have no physical audio cd player any more.

I don't think the tag info is actually on the CD. All the software I use needs internet access to get it.

As @kelper says the full rip & tag process normally (always?) needs internet access, but if you don't want to use one of the Windows Music Player apps with built-in ripping/tagging capability fre:acc might be worth a test run. - There's a portable option available for Windows - also available on Linux/Mac/FreeBSD. Or for something more 'sophisticated' perhaps MusicBrainz Picard also cross-platform (portable Windows version available from PortableApps.com).

The specifications for storing music on CDs is called Red Book.

There is an extension for Red Book called CD-Text. It allows for storage of additional information (text as album name, song name, and artist name) on a Red Book compliant audio CD.

Some hardware players are able to read CD-Text, however not all discographic labels include that information on the CD.

Software players as AIMP, Foobar2000, MediaMonkey, Media Player Classic, MusicBee, RealPlayer, SoundJuicer, Toast, VLC, Winamp (from V 5.31) and Windows Media Player (from V 10) can read CD-Text.

I believe AnyBurn (free), can do that. But I don't "know" cause I don't rip CDs or have any to test with...

Step #2 of this tutorial, seems to indicate that it can read CD-text and get info from the internet.

Reasons I like AnyBurn...

1. Simple interface, and very powerful (seems it can do... everything).
2. Doesn't try to call home all the time.
3. Has portable version as well, that can do everything the installed version can.
4. Installed AnyBurn folder size... 7.84 MB
5. Author(s) keep it current and it'll run on any Windows version from 2000 to Win 11 (x86 or x64).



Reasons I don't like AnyBurn...

1. It wasn't invented until 2012.
2. It doesn't make Pizza Rolls®

had problems with VLC -- probably windows as it was displaying some files in Dos 8.3 format which played Ok but was useless to know what the files were !!!!!

Will update Winamp -- that's always been OH in the past.

Doesn't work -- get either "invalid cd" or "auth failed or whatever".
I've given up on this and going to continue to use 2 apps on a Linux VM on Windows -- Asunder CD Ripper and K3b ripper.

latest version of Winamp seems to have problems getting info from a CDDB -- the previous versions used the gracenote cddb but where that's gone now !!!!.


Asunder CD ripper --really fast and tiny --- it rarely finds problems with getting cd info from the internet or a cddb. If it does then k3b gets info from cd itself but it's a bigger program - the Asunder one is tiny --ideal. Nice short file names with just the track info and not a load of other tagging stuff I don't want with artist and album / cd title.



Once I've ripped the cd's I doubt whether I'll get or use them again. So no long term solution needed.

Could it be a "regional" issue?

WMP should do it but that info comes from internet rather than the cd.
Make sure your PC is connected to the Internet if you want Windows Media Player to automatically get info about the songs, such as the name of the CD, the artist, and titles for the tracks being ripped.

Rip music from a CD

1. Open Windows Media Player.
2. Insert an audio CD into the PC's CD drive.
3. Select the Rip CD button .

I use dBpoweramp, it has the best quality, rips to FLAC lossless or MP3 and grabs the song info from the internet for the ID3 Tags

Echoing others here:

fre:ac and the old, tried, tested and true Exact Audio Copy both do really well, especially for lossless encoding. I primarily use EAC, with options set for my specific BD burner, but I also keep a copy of fre:ac nightly builds around just to test every once in a while.

I have a stack of new CDs that I've not ripped, yet, I hope to get to them this weekend.

I have EAC in its own folder running as a portable app, don't remember if I extracted from installer or actually installed to the folder, but it has survived numerous OS installs without needing to be installed again.
