Defrag/Trim

Samsung magician partitioned your OS disk.

I do not know what the volume GUID refers to. You might find it by using the DiskPart commands I have given you for each partition or by going further & using MountVol commands. But it's not relevant to the task you have set up because you have used drive letters in that. You are not using the defrag-optimize UI for routine optimizing any more so you don't really care what's in that now-redundant original defrag task.

If you are going to try to find that volume GUID, check what is in that original Windows-written defrag task first just to be sure you're looking for the right one.

All the best,
Denis

Samsung magician partitioned your OS disk.
It only created the last unallocated space partition. The others were created during windows installation.

Like you say, that volume GUID reference is not relevant anymore so I think it best for all our sakes if I leave it there. It's taken far too much time, yours and mine already.

If you really are interested, I used the advanced view to see the hidden volumes in the defrag-optimize UI just now and it shows these GUID references but still doesn't show the one you mentioned. The bottom one is my Blu-ray writer.

It's not what I mention that matters. It's the volume GUID you found in the original defrag task that matters. We've been copying so much back & forth that it would need checking to avoid being misled by any errors in posting here.

I've just finished packing my Win11 computer away so cannot check straightaway but I have not noticed an 'Advanced view' in its interface.

Here's the original volume GUID again to save any confusion:-

\\?\Volume{594885ca-129a-44de-890d-b9ba079677ae}\

The advanced view I mentioned in the Optimize Drives UI is easy to miss but if you take another look at my last screenshot above you will see a little blue check box with a tick in it. If you uncheck it the hidden volumes disappear.

@Try3

Just a quick update on my Scheduled Trim/Defrag task which you helped me create. It ran for the first time yesterday a full 25 minutes early. Also of note is that it only performed a Trim on my SSD, it did not carry out any defragmenting on my HDD's.

At this point and with the above in mind I think it would be fair to say that Windows Disk Defragmenter plays by it's own set of rules, regardless of any custom schedules. My mind boggles!!

I just checked the Task Scheduler History and Windows Event Viewer and it seems the missed tasks i.e. defrag HDD's was completed early this afternoon when my computer was idle. It seems like the tasks do run ok but if they get interrupted they restart once the computer becomes idle again. The screenshot below seems to verify this..

Screenshot 2022-01-21 145612.png

I'm also wondering if the setting below is incorrect and perhaps needs unchecking so the task can run even when the computer is not idle?

Screenshot 2022-01-21 145415.png

In addition to the above, Windows Event Viewer now confirms that my SSD has been trimmed again today and the HDD's have both been defragmented successfully. It seems logical to conclude therefore that if the Scheduled task is interrupted in any way the entire task will run again at the next available time regardless of whether some of it completed successfully as scheduled.

I've never needed to uncheck that Stop if it ceases to be idle once the Start only if idle setting has been cleared.
It wouldn't do any harm to do so though.

If your task is running when you don't want it and the idle condition seems to be involved then I think your Optimizer UI is still controlling it in some way that I do not understand.
- You are only referring to records of the task you created, I think.
- Your task is in your Task scheduler library section not in the same subfolder [Microsoft\Windows\Defrag] as the original, I think.

You can disable the original if you want to be even surer that there is no interference with your own task - just right click on the ScheduledDefrag entry within Microsoft\Windows\Defrag and select Disable

I've never seen these problems before. My defrag task completes so quickly that I've never accidentally caught it out by rebooting before it's finished.

This is all very puzzling,
Denis

- You are only referring to records of the task you created, I think. Correct
- Your task is in your Task scheduler library section not in the same subfolder [Microsoft\Windows\Defrag] as the original, I think. Yes, it's in the Task Scheduler Library

You can disable the original if you want to be even surer that there is no interference with your own task - just right click on the ScheduledDefrag entry within Microsoft\Windows\Defrag and select Disable. Not necessary, it disabled itself when I turned OFF Scheduled Optimization in the Optimizer UI.

Hi Denis,

I hope the in-line comments above were acceptable practice? Looking back at the Task Scheduler History above I think the 2 Warning 'Missed Task' messages were when the task restarted on my SSD and then the second one was when it defragmented my HDD's so this seems to add credence to my earlier assumption that if the original task is interrupted, then the entire task re-runs when the system is idle.

I did wonder if there is also some interplay between the Task Scheduler and the Active Hours found in 'System Settings - 'Windows update'. Mine is currently set as 'active ' between 12.00 - 04:00 hours daily so this seems to rule this out.

Like you say it's all very puzzling!

Update

A couple of weeks have passed since my last post so I wanted to update my progress using a custom Task Schedule. Thanks to @Try3 for helping me with this. (y)

I have since changed my custom Trim/Defrag schedule to now run at 14:30 hrs on Thursday of each week. What I have observed over these past two weeks is this..., the task will attempt to run close to the above time but this can be anywhere between 15 -30 minutes either side of the scheduled time, why I don't know but perhaps the system waits for the machine to become idle?

If the task is interrupted or fails to complete, i.e. the system is no longer idle, and regardless of how much of the task has completed, the entire task will attempt to re-run again at varying intervals until both jobs within the task have completed. My custom task consists of a Trim on my SSD and a Defrag on each HDD so if the Trim task completes but the Defrag does not, then both Trim & Defrag will be repeated over and over until the entire custom schedule is complete.

I'm not sure how many other people experience the same issues with Task Scheduler but I can live with the above situation. At least now my SSD isn't being wrongly flagged for defragmentation 3 times a week as was the previous situation.

I thought you had cleared the idle requirement in your task definition.
- So it shouldn't wait at all.
- And it shouldn't start early whether or not idle is a condition.

Yours in continuing bewilderment,
Denis

Actually no.., the idle requirement is greyed out so I can't change it. I checked what time it started on Thursday just gone and it was around 17 minutes late.

You're bewildered? Oh well at least nobody can accuse me of being predictable, I'd hate that!

P.S. Don't bother spending any more time with this Denis, I can live with it until MS finds a fix. If that ever happens....

I don't believe that Stop if it ceases to be idle has any effect with your existing settings.
I believe that Stop if it ceases to be idle only has an effect if Start the task only if idle is set.

But you could
Set the idle requirement [Start the task only if idle],
Clear the stop checkbox [Stop if it ceases to be idle],
Clear the idle requirement [Start the task only if idle],
to avoid any doubt.
