Dell Update - unable to install


I have none of those running in the background, because when I removed them after half a gigabyte of who knows what was uploaded to DELL for no apparent reason, none of my hardware stopped working.
Well it is true that we all have different PCs with different items installed, different things running, different results, and different problems. Though I've been pretty happy with my Dell Precision systems performance and their rock-solid reliability running Windows 11 Pro.

Sure. Even a base model Precision has more than enough horsepower to run all of the software it comes with, which is why I like them, too, but they're much snappier if you eliminate a couple hundred background processes. It's all a matter of preferences.

My group manages thousands of Dells, and I generally don’t feel a need to hate on them, but some of their dev decisions lately make me want to take them out behind the barn for a discussion.

IMO, saying that Dell has some q/c issues is a vast understatement. I've noticed this going back 7 years when I first purchased my XPS8950. According to Dell Pro Support, even the drivers shown for a specific service code are only for "generic" builds, and fail to reflect actual hardware that may or may not have been swapped out (e.g., for something less expensive, available) on a case by case basis when a device is shipped. Sloppy? Lazy? Mismanaged? Under-resourced? Take your pick.

Re the copious bloatware shipped with the device, in addition to bandwidth, CPU, and RAM utilization, we found SupportAssist (when it worked at all) to be heavy-handed, poorly optioned, and non-transparent - the absolute last thing we'd want on our production devices.

We decided to use Dell Update as a compromise, and stopped / started the myriad services it launches as appropriate, but now - likely due to user error - that's no longer an option. I'll give it another shot by updating to Dell Runtime 8.0.22 per itsme1's suggestion.
