All my desktop has is the wallpaper and the task bar... no icons like trash bin or apps. Where did they go and how do I get them back. I have tried to creat a new folder and that doesn't work.

You can attempt to rebuild your icon cache. Rebuild Icon Cache in Windows 11 Tutorial

But I have a suspicion this may have something to do with onedrive. Answer this, Do you use a MS account? Have you attempted to make any changes involving Onedrive?
Have you attempted to make any change to the default location of your user folders?

I put my icons on my TaskBar or into my Start Menu. If I'm going to the trouble to customize my desktop with pretty scenes, I don't want icons splattered all over it.

Got it resolved. I suspect that gremlins were involved. Even after the icons came back the recycle bin wasn't there. had to go to themes and check another box. TY all for the help.
