Solved disk cleanup removed from W11

Windows 11 Pro + Win11 Canary VM.
W11 has now removed our trusty friend disk cleanup and you now have to go via rather longwinded Storage Sense setting menus to remove windows.old.

Worse, the progress bar just sits there until action is complete and goes from 0% to 100% almost immediately i.e. you have no obvious display of the cleanup as we do with the old method.

Yet another retrograde step. I am now calling Windows 11 'Windows 9'.

You should still be able to manually open Disk Cleanup by running cleanmgr.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

You might try clicking on file explorer and then right clicking on your drive(C). Then click on properties and there it is. Just another way to get to disk cleanup.

I never used yet Disk cleanup on this system, so the size of unneeded/garbage files is quite large. But I also remember that cleaning up the Windows Update may take a lot of time, as explained Raymond Chen from Microsoft, so better to wait a bit more until release date. I would be very unhappy if such useful tool will be removed in the final version.

I did a search for disk cleanup and it found nothing. I shall create a shortcut for cleanmgr.

It still shows under Windows Tools on both my Windows 11 DEV and Beta Insider versions. Some other things I rely on are missing, but not Disk Cleanup.

Not on mine either. I just created a shortcut to Settings -> System -> Storage. That brings up dtorage settings and I click on "temporary files", and I am there.

To get the shortcut, create a new shortcut with explorer and use "C:\Windows\explorer.exe ms-settings:storagesense" as the target. You can pin it to start or taskbar.

Unless you really like that old Windows-95 style cleamgr 😉

I prefer old menu because as I explained in original post, the prgress bar is useless in Storage Sense.

I understand :D Appearances are cleanmgr may be one of those things on the way out though.

Disk Cleanup is on my 22000.194. I just type 'clean' in Start, and it is the top search result as ever.

Like the Win 9 :) has it gone totally or is still there hidden I wonder ? In an older version of 11 I searched for cleanmgr.exe and created a shortcut to it. I am on Beta 22000.194

I've got it as cleanmgr.exe on both of my Dev Channel PCs and my Beta Channel PC as well. Interesting!
