I'm really at the end of my tether with Edge, Thing is I believe it really is a good browser but they keep doing things that totally piddle people off !!
I've had to go through and reset so many settings!

Well if you no longer wan to use Edge, you can try either, or both, of the following apps: Edge Blocker v2.0 or Download GoAwayEdge 2.0.3 - MajorGeeks. Good Luck.

They fixed it and apologized, what's the problem? You want them to wash your dishes as well?

Microsoft owned up to whatever (if anything) happened. And fixed it.

Here's a lazy Co-Pilot cheat-sheet:

Microsoft Edge: "Your browser defaults had been changed unintentionally"

This message appears when Edge detects that one of your core browser defaults changed suddenly and it believes the change was not user‑initiated. Edge then restores its recommended defaults automatically.

What triggers this message?

Profile corruption (Edge can't load your profile cleanly)
Sync conflicts between local and cloud settings
Extensions modifying startup/search/homepage settings
External software (AV suites, “optimizer” tools, cleaners)
Edge crash or improper shutdown causing a recovery state

What Edge usually resets

Startup page / new tab page
Search engine
Pinned tabs
Site permissions
Extensions may be disabled

Your personal data (favorites, passwords, history) is not removed.

If it keeps happening

Check your active profile: Settings → Profiles
Repair Edge: Windows Settings → Apps → Microsoft Edge → Modify → Repair
Disable all extensions → re‑enable one by one
Remove any “system cleaners” or browser‑tweaking tools
Check for sync issues (turn sync off/on)

Summary
Edge is basically telling you: “Something changed a core setting without your action, so we restored the defaults.”
If it’s a one‑off, ignore it. If it repeats, you likely have a profile issue, a sync conflict, or an extension/software interfering.

I got that message on two of my systems too. Didn't notice anything had changed though so I just ignored it and carried on,

I gave up with Edge earlier this year (turned everything off related to it, deleted shortcuts and blocked Internet access) because it repeatedly changed my Home Page to a New Tab Page complete with all the ad ridden junk and news stories splashed all over it and my bookmarks spread across the top. It would happen after a few restarts of Edge. It also removed my 2 extensions (NoScript and uBlock Origin) every time.

It did the same thing on the other 2 desktop PC's I have here.

I read posts on places like Reddit where other people were having the same problem, particularly in my part of the world for some reason?

I tried Edge again a couple of weeks ago, updated it but it still does the same thing so it's disabled and ignored again. Also tried resetting Edge several times but it didn't help. I thought uBlock Origin might have had something to do with it seeing as it isn't supposed to work with Edge (or Google Chrome) anymore so I didn't reinstall that but it didn't make any difference.

One has other options. Chrome, Firefox, Brave, Vivaldi, DuckDuckGo, Opera, et al..... Pick one. You do not have to use Edge. However, I strongly disagree with the recommendation your were given to uninstall/block or otherwise mess with the presence of Edge in the OS. It is a core component of the OS. Leave it alone, Unpin its shortcuts so you don't see it, use another browser, and get on with your life.

I gave up on Microsoft browsers a long time ago. I use Firefox. I do still have Edge as a backup though. Sometimes Firefox has a problem with a page I need - not very often though - and that is the only case where I use Edge.

had the same message and the only things i found changed and added was more copilot
if you check in the address bar edge:flags

you will find lots of added copilot entries.

I do use Copilot a good bit in my study of Windows Internals technicals and C# programming using Microsoft Visual Studio. Edge has been my only browser for five years and still no error messages with Edge on either of my two computers.

I run Windows completely clean with no hacks, and I don't use any of the popular programs that modify Windows.

If you're genuinely that fed up with Edge, you could always do what I did, change the region in your OS to a EU Country (I chose Ireland) and you can then delete Edge and Copilot in the default Apps list and never have to worry about them again. No third party tools involved, just a bit of time and effort from yourself changing it using the Out Of the Box Experience method. Too much trouble and effort for most, but I found it ridiculously cathartic!

And no, deleting Edge using the method above does not break Windows as some have spouted in various threads around the web because MS aren't allowed to break the OS for people who choose not to have the product on their PC. At least the EU had the nuts to stand up to MS.

Personally, I have no idea why some find Edge so great because in my personal opinion, it's little more than bloatware and no where near as good as Brave Browser, but opinions are like the hole in one's butt, everyone has one!

MS should offer the ability to easily uninstall Edge globally instead of only offering EU Countries the option to uninstall it as easily as any other software.

its not an error message, its a information message and my Windows 11 25H2 runs in Gnome boxes on Linux and is heavy modified.
i have also just run again Chris Titus WinUtl, just to be sure all that was removed stays removed.

So far as I'm aware it simply wasn't broken. in this case it turned loads of stuff back on that favoured Microsoft and only those settings that favoured Microsoft. This meant that I had to go and reset lots of settings , including setting the sync settings so that all my other installation of Edge logged in on the same account changed too. Very annoying!

Check underneath the hood!.. i was surprised how many settings it did change , while leaving others intact, it was very selective. It wasn't a full reset.

Thanks G, I have always found your input on these forums useful (I read a lot more than i post ) I like the look of vivaldi so far takes a while to customise but seems to honour its settings.
