Windows 11 Pro 22H2 (OS Build 2263.3593)
I have a two-year-old 17" Asus Vivobook which originally came with Windows 10 Pro installed. I upgraded to Windows 11 Pro shortly afterwards and it runs perfectly. Now I am trying to enable the machine to boot so that the NUM LOCK is permanently engaged but after changing the regedit HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE/Control Panel/Keyboard, HKEY Current User/Control panel/Keyboard, and those in HKEY_USERS/S 1-5-18 through 20 Control Panel to a setting of (2) for it to work and it does while I am still logged in.
But it keeps reverting back to I guess what is maybe a default setting for the original Windows 10 Pro version whenever I reboot the next day. I have looked in the Group Editor but cannot find any settings in there to get the NUM LOCK to do what I want.
Any thoughts and advice really appreciated.

The Tutorial for the NumLock either here or on tenforums.com works for me but I have to remember that it preserves the state of the NumLock during shutdown or reboot, if On it comes back On or if Off it comes back as Off.

We just had a recent thread about NUM LOCK. In certain situations, the NUM LOCK state gets reset after a wake. There's a script for a scheduled task to enforce the same setting whenever your PC restarts or resumes. Beware, this thread wanders all over, but the script might help you.

I have a Bootup NumLock State [on or off] setting in my BIOS, Worth a look.

I was going to say this as well. Every machine I've built had a setting in the BIOS (older computers) / UEFI firmware (modern computers) to enable / disable the NUMLOCK status on boot. I know the OP mentioned this breaks on wake from sleep, but if certain ACPI Sleep states are also enabled (in UEFI), could it be possible that, even though the machine is being put to sleep, it's actually being handled by the UEFI, and thus being reset to default UEFI setting upon wake?

Ok Shawn am trying this method now and I have also contacted Asus Australia Support to see if they have any other solutions. Mate frankly changing the registry values surely should not be able to be overridden by some sort of what I suspect is an Asus default setting.
Anyway I shall have to wait and see what tomorrow morning brings as that is when the NUMLock is found to be disabled - overnight as during the rest of the day after changing the registry key settings it works perfectly even after having to restart the machine for whatever reason.

Sounds like a fast startup setting to me rather than an ASUS setting. Turn it off in power options and make sure NumLock is on. See if ok after a few shutdowns (not restarts). If ok then turn fast startup again if needed. Worth a try.

changing the registry values surely should not be able to be overridden by some sort of what I suspect is an Asus default setting.
The correct explanation has already been provided by CEPtor almost fourteen years ago. (See the link I posted in my 1st reply.)
For some reason, the default value of some of the registry keys (not all) were changed in windows 7, which causes the system to apparently ignore the InitialKeyboardIndicators settings in the other locations.
Many years ago I have experienced this same exact problem myself also. That's how I know that you have to apply the registry change to the other locations in the registry also, as merely applying it under the key HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard isn't necessarily always going to be enough to fix it in such a way that the fix will stay permanent.

Ok Fabler well this morning using that link by Brink seems to be working and it just is going to be a wait and see as this machine of mine seems to have a mind of it's own sometimes.

Ok mate I will revisit the link in case it goes belly up again.
