Error while trying to get backup


The primary event IDs used by the WinREAgent source to log your recovery partition update status are:

  • Event ID 4501: Indicates Servicing succeeded. This is the event that confirms your Windows Recovery Environment was updated successfully via Windows Update. [1]
  • Event ID 4502: Indicates Servicing failed. This error commonly surfaces if your recovery partition lacks the necessary free storage space to apply the update. [1, 2, 3]
Check for errors in your Event Viewer, If you received a 4502 you ran out of space

For example...
A while back, my EFI partition was "before" the C: partition.
For some reason I moved "after" the C: partition.

A while later, I tried to restore from a backup that was made when the EFI partition was "before" the C: partition, and it threw an error.
So I just restored the C: partition by itself, and then the EFI partition, by itself.
That worked. :-)



You just need to figure out why the Source (image you're trying to restore), and Destination (location you're trying to restore to), don't agree with each other.

Then use the bootable media to do the restore.
It has "check boxes" for both the source and destination, so you can pick and choose.

Using the bootable media, I can "UNcheck" one of the two partitions in the backup, and it will only restore the one that's still check marked...

Or like it says, you can drag & drop from the source to the destination.

The source is ME :-) Since the issuance of Windows 11, Windows originally offered a much smaller Recovery Partition (don't know why). As time has moved on, during many of its updates/upgrades it has decided to issue a new WinRE.wim located in the Recovery Partition, almost always larger. After a few of these, the Recovery Partition lacked space to accommodate the new WinRE,wim. When this happens, WIndows shrinks its OS partition to make room for a newer, larger Recovery Partition. When this happens, all imaging geometry, regardless of application used, changes on the System disk. This almost always causes issues with a users imaging software (partitions have changed).

Rather than deal with constant interruption of my automatic imaging software, I decided to increase the size of the existing Recovery Partition... an added 1gB was nothing based on the size of the disk itself... no more problems.

If Windows keeps increasing the size of the WinRE.wim, your magic 992mB Recovery Partition size may fall by the wayside as well. My current "active" disk space in use on the Recovery Partition is 768.99gb... sure it'll work fine on your 992mB Recovery Partition, but for how long.

Should be plenty for a total. The increases for the WinRE.wim have been between 40-60mb along the way... you should be fine.

Looks like you're taking MANUAL images rather than using a definition file. If you have an existing definition file, it may be changed using the EDIT function with the definition selected. If doing manual images each time, just using your function above and make sure the proper partitions are selected.

I usually delete my recovery partition shortly after any new install so no worry there. They are not needed since Macrium offers Restore at Boot.
I switch between Canary & Dev on the same system for testing purposes and use regagentc /disable since the recovery partitions are different between the two branches. The recovery partition is purely optional if you use a third part backup software anyway.

When I try to right-click on the recovery partition to extend using unallocated space I dont see any option to do so. Do I have to use another tool for this ?

Yeah. You can't do that in Disk Management.
