Solved External SSD no longer works using laptop's USB-C port

Recently, I had to use the USB-C port on my laptop that I was using for my external SSD for charging, as I didn't have the regular circular charger on hand. After I got my regular charger and reconnected my external SSD, the SSD didn't show up. I disconnected and reconnected it multiple times and restarted the laptop and it still didn't show up. I then got the USB-A to USB-C cable that came with the SSD and plugged it into the USB-A 2.0 port on my laptop (USB-A 3.0 port was occupied by my mouse), and it immediately worked. Also, the SSD light doesn't light up when connected to the USB-C port. Why does the SSD not work anymore when connected to the USB-C port?

First, for the best data transfer speed move the USB mouse to a USB 2 port and the USB drive to a USB 3 port. Same for a USB keyboard to a USB 2 port. USB 2 ports/plugs usually have black centers and USB 3 are blue. Most Notebooks/Laptops of the several years support Bluetooth Wireless as part of the Wireless/Wi-Fi adapter so I use Bluetooth mice on them, frees up a USB port.

Next, have you checked the USB drive in a different computer? Variables are cables/quality, the ports and the drive.

I have a mix of such devices and very few issues with them. I also have a 4-port USB 3 self-powered Hub for more devices, 1 port can be used for charging.

Have you tried to update the drivers on your notebook from HP.
From what I can tell, your notebook came with Windows 10 and
now , you have Windows 11.
HP doesn't have a dedicated Windows 11 driver page for your notebook
so, try the Windows 10 drivers to see if any progress. Also, BIOS update.


There are quite a few diag programs for the HP notebooks. Try one of them
after the updates if there are any.

I have a T7 1TB and it always worked with USBc ports. It even works on a
Thunderbolt port.

Do yo have the Samsung Magician installed to verify the state of the T7?

I swapped the mouse and SSD shortly after posting so the SSD has the faster USB-A 3.0 port.

I don't have any other devices with USB-A or C to test the drive with.

I already went through HP's website and updated a lot of the drivers late last year. Nothing (other than the BIOS) seems to have had an update since I last checked. I was already aware about my BIOS being multiple versions out of date. I was already planning to update it soon, so I'll try updating it tomorrow, when I have the time.

I found an HP diagnostic program already installed called, "HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows" and went through it. I couldn't find anything related to USB ports or external drives.

To clarify, the drive was working with the USB-C port, but stopped working after I temporarily used the port for charging.

I don't have Magician yet. I tried to install the latest version of it a few months ago, but it didn't work at all when tried to install it. The installer got stuck when it was complete and it refused to launch after I forced the installer to stop. I wasn't able to completely uninstall it until recently as the uninstaller also didn't work. I'll try installing an older version tomorrow to see if it works.

Only thought I have is something about the charging and disconnecting turned the port off, maybe in Windows or in the BIOS.

Are you sure that USB-C port supports charging? Not all of them do. Besides, the laptop has a "circular port" to charge. Does it support charging in two ways?

I’ll check the BIOS and look around Windows later, when I’m done with school.

Question for clarity, was the Notebook/Laptop being charged through the USB-C port or was the port being used to charge another device? I've not yet seen a Notebook have 2 charging methods, only through the AC adapter/charger unit. Cellphones accept a USB-C cable from a power adapter plugged into an AC source/wall socket but maybe plugging that into a Notebook port could kill it..

Could be a coincidence but maybe the USB-C to USB-C cable is damaged. Can you try another one to connect the external drive?

I don't know if it's even possible but I'll ask anyhow. Is there a possibility that when you used the USB C port as a charger that a BIOS setting could have changed it from a data port to a charging port?

My wife's Lenovo Thinkbook and my Dell Inspiron both charge through either the round DC port or the Thunderbolt USB 4.0 port.

I'm still not getting information that the Thunderbolt ports are useful for charging a Notebook, providing power into the Notebook. This page shows that the Thunderbolt port can provide 14W power out to accessories:

I just fixed it! I found a setting called USB charging in the BIOS and changed it from enabled to disabled. I started Windows back up, plugged the USB-C to USB-C cable in, and it works!

Great, now all you have to do is try a phone to charge it and see if it will still charge a peripheral
or if the BIOS change has stopped the port from charging peripherals altogether.
Let us know pls.

On my notebook (MSI Raider) I have a switch in MSI Center which allows me to either have the peripherals
have power while the notebook is off with certain caveats. This is very convenient.

The external drive has been working perfectly through the USB-C port for the past day.
