File Explorer crashes after search

Today, I tried to find all files in a folder with many sub-folders and files by searching for the word "alcohol".
The search list appears briefly - just long enough for me to see that it has found a number of files in various subdirectories. Before I can select a file to look at, File Explorer crashes.

Windows 11 Pro Version 21H2 (OS Build 22000.1335)
This has not happened previously.
I've cleared the File Explorer cache (more than once)
restarted the machine after each time
At the CMD, ran sfc /scannow
1st pass noted corrupt files and fixed them
2nd run was clean
Restarted the machine again
Same crash!

I've not been happy with File Explorer for some time because it seems slow - lots of spinning circles.
It has been suggested that I have too many files, folders, desktop shortcuts, mapped drives, & Quick Access items.
That would be disappointing; I think I have a reasonably outfitted kit for "lots of stuff".
Maybe I'm wrong.
The box is a Dell Alienware Aurora R9 with Intel i9-9900 CPU @ 3.10GHz, 64GB Ram, Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super, 1TB SSD C drive, 2TB HDD data drive.
My In-house network has a NAS which I access regularly - I believe all the connection points are fast enough so this shouldn't be a problem, but again .........

File Explorer doesn't crash when I search on other folders on the D drive.

Any advice would be gratefully reviewed.
Dianne

Here are a few things to try.
1. run the troubleshooter settings>system>troubleshoot>other troubleshooters>search and indexing RUN.
2. Run another sfc /scannow to make double sure there is no corruption.
3. Scan with Malwarebytes to make sure you have no malware. MWB installs with a 14 day free trial. After 14 days, it reverts to their free version.
4. Opening file explorer to quick access has been know to cause this problem when one has a lot of files. Change it to open to "this PC' instead. . Control panel>file explorer options>general tab. You can also disable quick access entirely by unchecking "show recently used files'
5. See if problem exists when running in clean boot. This will eliminate faulty software being the problem. Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 11 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts Tutorial
6. If you run a third party anti-virus, disable it and test.
7. update your graphics driver

The only thing I haven't done so far is #5.
Everything else has been checked off.
Will try a clean boot - not expecting much because no new software has been added.

If it's not a software problem, you may have to take one of the more drastic measures to fix it...ideally restoring a backup image is best. Otherwise in order of severity, running dism, doing a reset and keep your data, repair install, clean install. You have to choose what is right for you from the alternate methods.

To run dism from command prompt as administrator, type dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth (note the spaces)

To reset - Settings>Recovery>Reset PC>then choose your options

Repair install - Repair Install Windows 11 with an In-place Upgrade Tutorial
Clean install - Clean Install Windows 11 Tutorial

If you do not currently have a backup solution in place, I suggest you develop one that works for you. There are several free programs out there that are used by members of this forum.
