Sounds good to me. I googled the terms of service and Mozilla says there are no ads and they won't sell your data. Using a VPN is all about trusting the provider. I'm not currently using Firefox, but if/when I do, I will use their free VPN. Also, keep in mind that their vpn only protects the browser traffic-it doesn't protect the whole system. If you try it, let us know what the performance is like (free vpns tend to be slower due to the load). Note there are other free vpn services, for instance proton offers a free VPN browser plugin.
Unless your doing something shady and need to hide I always found VPN's to be more trouble then they're worth. Slower Internet service, several websites won't open, etc.
The only time I ever used a VPN was for the same reason.
Well, I'm no expert, just going by my limited experience trying free VPN's and what I've read on VPN's. My Vivaldi Browser has limited free VPN and anytime I tried it half my websites wouldn't open or work due to the location change. I know a lot of people like to use them while pirating free TV streaming but I find those streaming sites more trouble then they're worth as well as the Feds are constantly finding them and shutting them down. A new crop will literally always pop up over night but it's just a never ending cycle.

There's a difference between your work VPN and a free VPN. In most cases a public VPN is not as fast as your native connection particularly a free one. Your work VPN is probably using your workplace internet. Download speed and latency are the two most effected. If you're just doing email and other light activities, you probably would not notice the difference.
I think some people are just trying to protect their privacy, avoid tracking and marketing, etc. You're correct that sometimes there's a performance penalty and occasionally a website won't work. I used a paid service for a while that was a lot faster.
I agree that the notion of anonymity on the internet is a myth. Certainly a VPN doesn't get you there. Only the TOR network does, and it's not a guarantee. One thing that a VPN is useful for is location shifting when information is not accessible from your home country. For instance, sometimes access to videos is limited by location, and using a VPN can get around that.
