fresh install vs loading image

i just built a new computer. i had an windows image with all my programs and settings exactly the way i like it. doing it all over sucks and takes a few hours. but i decided to install fresh windows. the thought i had was i'm going from X570 chipset with DDR4 to X650E chipset with DDR5 and didn't want any potential conflicts loading an old image on different hardware. but now that's it's done i'm wondering, would this work? drivers is my first concern, but i guess i could uninstall the old stuff. the next thought was windows assigns every computer a unique identifying number and not sure how it would respond to a new board and cpu. can you guys think of any other potential problems? has anybody ever tried this?

Back it up now and then try restoring from your older image. Macrium Reflect can restore to different hardware. If you have trouble activating it, phone MS and they will fix it. We will be very interested to hear how you get on.
If it doesn't work, you can restore from the image you just made.

I expect so. Check the motherboard website for drivers.

Have you installed and activated Windows on the new computer? If so then it has a digital licence on the MS activation servers for the edition you installed, Home or Pro. Any image of that same edition will activate from the existing digital licence.

My main laptop had Windows 10 and all my programs and settings just as I wanted them, but it was too old to be supported for Windows 11. So I bought another one that was a supported device, restored an image of my old W10 machine to it, then upgraded to 11 as soon as it was offered in Windows Update.

I have the paid for version of Macrium Reflect that has an option to restore to dissimilar hardware, but I didn't need to use that option. I just restored the image 'as is' and Windows sorted out the drivers it needed at first boot up. All worked perfectly, despite the massive hardware differences - the old laptop was an Intel based machine and the new one was entirely AMD, it is my System One in My Computers below.

For me it takes days, and it does suck big time.

Have I ever done it? Yes. But my OCD never let me feel comfortable about doing it so at some point I clean installed anyway.

My opinion on this differs from most everyone else's. While I do agree 11 is very good with sorting out and using the correct drivers, I do not want a bunch of old unused drivers in my driver store that could in any way jump up and bite me in the butt later on. Also, although I keep my system as clean as I can make it, there still junk in it. If I get a new machine, I consider that the perfect time to start with a new, clean OS to go along with the new hardware.

Something other than drivers you need to consider is your paid software. Whether you image or clean install, be sure you deactivate any licenses you may have for paid software before you image your old computer. Then you can easily register the software on your new one. In most cases these licenses are tied to the hardware. It will save you a lot of grief on the new machine

In years past not having imaging software and before the backup to VHD file came along, applying to desktops however, I would run into the activation issue when moving the OS as well as other drives into a new custom build with enough hardware issue to force the fresh install and then have to call MS in order to see the transfer was made as far as the product key. The same for existing copies of Windows where the drivers from one build had to be cleaned off totally if there was too much of a hardware difference.

With any brand new machine an OEM laptop or desktop you would find they either have a recovery partition or recovery media included. Restoration of an image from another machine could put you in harm's way unless seeing to the advice kelper gave you on first seeing to creating a full system image that you can restore the new laptop with just in case of any mishap?
As for time it may take? Try weeks at a time here multibooting OSs and presently seeing the latest Macrium Reflect release creating a full image of 11 as a clone to a larger destination not being able to see a clean install take place due to the TPM 2.0 issue. For older desktops there is a separate TPM 2.0 module being looked into that provides the required support in order to be able to simply toss on a clean install if and when needed.

One thing to know however is that see image backups made can also take some time! But you don't generally have to attend to each program installed once made and restored while a fresh install on the other hand sees the correct device drivers downloaded as each bit of hardware goes through the detection process. Generally the support site will point you to the correct updates when you enter the model information.
