If they do start work on Windows 12 in March, it's still going to take time before it is ready for release. It's possible they don't release it until the end of Windows 10 support. Another possibility is that MS can make Windows 11 the last free upgrade and Windows 12 the begging of the paid upgrades again. MS has been giving us free upgrades. When they released Windows 11, they still allowed free upgrades but decided as to what hardware they wanted it to run on. This brought on a lot of users saying that MS can't do this. I not a lawyer but I do believe they do have the right to decide on what hardware specs they want their OS to run on. They haven't abandoned anyone because Windows 10 is still going to be supported for a few more years.

It's not a dirty trick. The older devices struggle because they're just not powerful enough to handle the new features. Google does the same thing. Windows has done a better job of supporting old devices. Up to Windows 10 at least.

OMG !! Look at me!! Defending Apple !! Hell must have frozen over. I have had a long standing personal boycott against buying anything made by them.

When Windows 8 came out, there was talk of Windows 9 (I think there was even Nine forum created?). Instead, a year later, we got Windows 8.1, three years later Windows 10.

I see the same happening here, we just got Windows 11, and there's talk of 12, but we haven't even seen the first major Windows 11 update yet. Could Windows 12 be what we got in 8.1 (instead of being called Windows 9)?

Just a thought :)

Has Intel finally gone completely mental?! Even requiring new hardware with TPM 2.0 has already been pushing the envelope for many people. Like my old 6700K ran Windows 10 perfectly fine, and will do for 99% of all typical home applications. I bought my i9 12900K for hefty processes like x265, but that makes me the exception.

So, I bought a new Z960 motherboard and the works. If now, with Windows 12 -- assuming it's all true -- a new Pluton CPU is required, they can all go royally put it where the sun don't shine.

Windows 7 was NT 6.1 (6+1=7)
Windows 8 was NT 6.2 (6+2=8)
Windows 9 later Windows 8.1 was NT 6.3 (8+1=9, 6+3=9)
Windows 10 initially was NT 6.4 (6+4=10) and later changed to 10 to agree with Windows Mobile version.

Nothing surprising there at all. NT Sequence only works because W7 started at 6.1 and 8.1 came out, and Windows 9 never materialised.
Assuming W11 and W12 followed sequence NT 6.6, NT 6.7, it will fall over when NT 6.8 comes out as that would be W14. Can you imagine W13 ever being issued?

I really ~~disliked~~ loathed Windows 8, and when that tool Sinofsky doubled-down on it, I decided to go all-Apple, work & home. I bought an iMac in late 2013, and I'm irked that Apple cut it off a couple of versions back. It's frustrating to have your hardware dropped after 7 years. Computers last a lot longer than they used to.

I suspect MS will not cut off the unsupported CPUs until there's some must-have CPU feature they must implement to move Windows forward. I think Windows 11 is a tentative step in that direction. There are so many Windows machines out there that serious economic damage can come from some of these wormable exploits, and they're cognizant of that. On a few occasions we've seen them patch XP, 2003, and 2008 years after they went EOL. But some of the things they've done with Windows 11 certainly make me question my assumptions. That's why I'm keeping my unsupported PCs on 10 until it's EOL. If they're still running and there's still a way, I'll upgrade then.

Windows 10 provides the same level of security with Windows 11 with the same settings and applications. For supported systems all you need to do is to install in UEFI mode, enable Secure Boot and TPM. Only the visuals change. For unsupported systems you are protected by Windows Defender in both Windows versions. So don't worry too much if you run Windows 11 on unsupported computers. As I have seen so far in numerous unsupported systems I have installed Windows 11 on, all updates install without any compatibility check. The check is done only during the initial installation or upgrade from earlier versions. In all other cases there is no difference between running Windows Update in Windows 11 or 10. Thankfully most drivers have been moved to the optional updates, so there is less risk to screw your working drivers.

This is all true, for now. I don't think it will be in a year or 2. Very possibly sooner.

Windows 10 will end support in 2025 so eventually we will have to install Windows 11 on our unsupported computers or buy a new. Since me computer serves my good I wouldn't like to replace it, so why wait? I run Windows 11 right now to have the latest software.

If they continue Defender definition updates past 2025, I may very well keep my Win 10 machines past that date. I'm sure an upgrade to 11 will no longer be possible by any means.

Much like Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows 7 still receive definitions updates, I guess Windows Defender will still be getting updates. If I am not mistaken these updates are common for Windows 10 and 11. I see no reason why upgrading to Windows 11 won't be possible after 2025, unless Microsoft does something weird and no hack works anymore. Hopefully not. Yet another reason to upgrade now while the hacks still work.
