Getting Windows 10 Computer Ready For Windows 11

It has always been my understanding that a system had to be secure boot capable, not that secure boot had to be turned on. As soon as I got this PC last year that had Windows 10, I immediately turned secure boot of in bios. It upgraded to 11 just fine. Secure boot is still off.

CPU-Z is more useful for custom systems then vendor builds. It's not going to answer the question of secure boot; even on a custom build that question isn't going to be answered by CPU-Z.

True, but it will tell him what model ASUSTek motherboard he has. Unless his local builder gave him all the documentation for all the components in his build, in which case he would have the motherboard manual.

Not surprising as there are many BIOS layouts and not all provide the same level of settings; especially where store bought PC's are concerned as some of those BIOS's can be locked down to prevent end users from making changes to certain settings.

That said, if your PC came with Windows 11 installed, chances are the BIOS was already configured to support the OS. As to why System Information says Secure Boot is off, I don't know, other than to say there was some discussion as to whether Secure Boot is actually a "requirement", but it's my understanding vendor PC's sold with the Windows 11 OS must also have secure boot enabled.

That said, I asked before, and you never replied... post what PC or at the very least link to the one you bought.

Good luck.
I thought I did reply. I filled out all the information I could find describing my computer. Not sure what else may be needed.

Perhaps Microsoft needs to answer this but why does it need to be "capable" if it doesn't need to be turned on?

And yes, I read those Microsoft Requirements as well - Windows 11 Specs and System Requirements | Microsoft

Anyway, I'm not going to argue that point as I leave Secure Boot on anyway, so I can't confirm or deny Windows installs with it off.

Peace :)

I am trying to follow instructions telling me how to get into the UEFI BIOS. I am supposed to open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery. When I open Settings there is no Update & Security option to choose. Even searching for it shows no results. I can Search for Recovery and proceed from there. However, I luckily stumbled on that. Any idea why I do not have that Update & Security option when opening Settings? Please see attachment to see what I am talking about. I just checked and these instructions work on my Windows 10 computer. It is confusing why they don't work on this Windows 11 computer and I have not yet found the steps to follow for my Win 11 machine. I did just find it for Win 11. Sorry but it is confusing to me and you can ignore this post's question.Settings.jpg

Well on my Windows 11 machine that says the Secure Boot is off, I did a search for Secure Boot once I was in the UEFI settings. What came up was Secure Boot = Custom setting. The only other option using the drop-down-arrow next to Custom was a choice of Standard. I found no way to set the Secure Boot mode to On. Any suggestions where the On or Enable for Secure Boot would be found or possibly another search other than Secure Boot?

For a ASUS motherboard use the DEL key at POST to get into UEFI/BIOS.

EDIT: TPM is called PTT in the ASUS bios.

Platform Trust Technology is Intel's term for a firmware TPM. AMD calls theirs fTPM.

Well I just spent over an hour in a chat with ASUS motherboard support. He had me running around in circles because he had no idea what he was doing either. I asked, for about the 5th time, how do I turn the Secure Boot form Off to On? Here was his solution, which I have little confidence in because he originally told me to install the Default Secure Boot Keys, F10 exit and save. When I questioned him again, again telling him I had an OFF status for the Secure Boot and wanted to turn it on he came back with this sequence:
Go back to BOOT > Launch CSM > select [Disabled]
Press F10 to save and exit then reset.

I have no idea what CSM stands for and he did not answer me. So I Googled it can came up with Compatibility Support Module.

Does the above instructions make any sense to anyone here and would you try it?

I suggest downloading the BIOS settings manual for your motherboard. Prime 690-P WiFi. See page 75.

There are separate settings for CSM and Secure Boot. I have a similar motherboard (Prime Z690-A) with CSM disabled and Secure Boot enabled.

After trying to make sense out of the manual, I've come to the conclusion it's ahead of my pay grade, for sure.

Don't be intimidated. Just find you way to the right page in the settings, disable CSM, and enable Secure Boot. There may be people who understand all of the BIOS settings, but I'm not one such. The ones that are of use to most of us are few in number.
