Has Microsoft replaced your OEM print driver yet???

linux has been using IPP since the beginning of time. thats why i know that my printer works with IPP on Windows as i purchased the printer when running and using Linux so i had to check any hardware would work with Linux before i purchased any hardware especially printers. basic IPP is just fine for our needs.

best of luck Steve ..
Right, CUPS is basically the reference implementation. Windows has had IPP since like Windows 2000, so not really a huge brag for Linux or anything. :)

No problems with Linux here. I have macOS and Linux devices in my house. I just don't talk about them much because this is a Windows forum.

I've had the Dymo printer for more than ten years, the new ones only work with overpriced Dymo brand labels, so I bought another of the LabelWriter 400 Turbo ones on eBay for $25 to have a spare. I'm not paying a couple hundred for a new label printer and then having to buy labels that are about 5x-6x the price of the perfectly good generic labels I've been using for years!

I can buy the genuine Dymo address labels for $15 for 500, or the identical 3rd party labels for $20 for 3500. Guess which option I pick? 🙄
I can guess. I have the PnP printer, which is much more basic. Once I bought a set of generic lablels, like $15 instead of $43 from Dymo. But, but, but, it was very hard to peel the backing tape off the generic labels. I ended up wasting a lot of time, fingernails, and tape itself.

It depends on the quality of the generic tape. Yours probably was very bad. Try another brand.

My intent for creating this thread was to make everyone aware that 'printing' is changing. You all need to be aware of ALL the options. Do I blame Microsort for all printing problems.... No, the manufactures including HP which I have, never updated thier Windows 10 drivers for Windows 11.

Check the specs before buying any new printers that they are 'updated' and support the new printer standards.

If you don't meet the above requirements, just toggle the Windows Protected Print mode OFF and keep using your legacy drivers.

Odd, the ones I buy from Amazon are every bit as good and easy to use as the Dymo labels I was stupid enough to be buying when I first got the printer! Amazon Address Labels, 3500 for $22. Or for $2 less you can have 20% of the label count of genuine Dymo address labels. 🙄

I was actually going to buy a new Dymo printer to replace the one that I was having issues with until I found out it would only print on gold plated Dymo brand labels! At that point, I took the old printer apart and fixed it. I also found a duplicate on eBay for peanuts and bought myself a spare.

It's the same reason I'm buying Brother printers, they still haven't totally drank the Kool-Aid and started only running with their brand toner cartridges. They did make a brief foray in that direction but apparently the customer pushback made them change their mind. Most other printer brands are making it very difficult to impossible to use 3rd party toner for their printers.

That's why I said not to upgrade the firmware in old models. However if the retailer has already upgraded the firmware before selling the old refurbished model, then your only option is to find another brand of third-party consumables that can bypass the "genuine check" or downgrade the firmware, if possible.

t's the same reason I'm buying Brother printers, they still haven't totally drank the Kool-Aid and started only running with their brand toner cartridges.
Many new printers like my Cannon don't even use toner cartridges anymore. You just buy the bottles of ink which last much longer and fill the ink tanks on the printer itself.

I know, but not all printers do that. Most use ink cartridges or toner cartridges and if the chip on a third-party one hasn't been programmed properly, the new firmware can tell it is not genuine and refuse to print until you put genuine ink/toner. Manufacturer claims new features or security patches to lure us upgrade the firmware. Don't fall into that trap, you might not be able to downgrade to the previous firmware afterwards.

My current printer, purchased in 2009. Even the scanner works in Windows apps. I think that is pretty amazing that going on two decades, it still functions in Windows just as when it was new. This to me is one of the more amazing things about Windows, the huge array of devices it works seamlessly with and over such a long period of time.

Well, you're mixing metaphors. Toner is used in laser printers, and the ink is used in inkjet printers. I don't know of a single Canon, or any other laser printer that doesn't use toner, it's basic to how they print!

My bad on terminology, to be honest I always considered them the same thing. So my point was ink tanks or "Mega tanks" are the latest craze for new printers now vs ink cartridges.

Yes, but the "mega tanks" are only on inkjet printers. You're just looking at inkjet printers, as there are no such provisions on laser printers.

I left inkjet printers in the dustbin of history around 15 years ago, and all the printers we here here are laser printers.

Oh well, since the the thread seemed to be about printers and drivers in general and the majority of printer users at home use inkjets thought I'd point it out.

Oh well, since the the thread seemed to be about printers and drivers in general and the majority of printer users at home use inkjets thought I'd point it out.
No argument there, just wanted to clarify the differences in the printing types. You're right, I'm sure inkjets have come a long ways since I abandoned them.

When I had them, I was forever cleaning heads, having cartridges dry out and clog, etc. I can leave a laser printer for months and then just power it on and get perfect prints. I'm kinda' addicted to the speed of modern laser printers as well.

That's one of the reasons I like Windows. Backwards compatibility. Try doing that on a Mac...
