Seriously though, we had a home burglary 12 years ago and all my wife's jewelry and my computer and backups were stolen. Thankfully OneDrive was the offsite component of my backup strategy, and I didn't lose any data or photos.

yeah i have my own servers too, but i have a feeling you already know that by now.

But not everyone have the knowledge or the hardware to set up an off-prim server... or a tiny nas at a friends house or en external disk off-site.

Then cloud storage is good, as you always should have at least three setups of the important data.. on the device, external disk and off-site.... as no server setup in your home will survive a full blown house-fire where the firemen cant put it out and they just let it burn down.

So offsite backup for 95% of the world population has to be in the cloud as they dont have the knowledge or means to do it the nerd-way as few of us do.

I don't know which post in this topic mentioned it... but encrypting your data before OneDrive sends it off to
"ooh let's see what files he/she has" land... is probably the ONLY way cloud storage would be somewhat safe.

When someone builds a cloud storage server, they HAVE complete access to anything on it.

They also have all the time in the world to brute force your encryption, as well.

I know i mention it in another thread.. something similar to use an end-to-end encrypted storage, or use veracrypt to encrypt the data and then use onedrive.
Its kind of pointless to encrypt the data with bitlocker if microsoft has the encryption key.

yes it is.. but not everyone has one nearby, but they might have a relative or a friend nearby they can store an external disk at.

Just encrypt the disk if trust isn't 110%

They have two keys, the bank has one and the customer has the other and in good banks it takes both keys.

I thought we lost my Uncle's keys after he passed. The bank wanted to charge $200.00 to open it with all kinds of proof. My cousin and I were going through his stuff and I found his ken inside a hat box with many old hats. ( now this is OT)
