Has OneDrive gone insane?!

I don't understand why burglars would steal backups. That is just hilarious. Unless they are on your PC.
The backups were on a backup drive that was sitting beside the PC. Yeah, hilariously they grabbed it too.

I KNOW.
I simply don't want my personal data stored in a public cloud environment. For work, I don't care. I have my personal cloud space (NAS) that I can access from any device.

OneDrive and or any other online storage is as useless as you know what on a Bull. With all of the hackers in This World why anyone would trust any company's on line storage of their personal Data.. I store all of my data on SSD's.
I have data stored in OneDrive. Most of it's not sensitive. I have a Microsoft 365 subscription for our family. Have all of our phones setup to do Camera Roll backups to OneDrive. We never have to remember to back anything up, and in the event that a phone is lost, damaged, or stolen our pictures are always still available on the cloud.

For some people, they don't take the time to backup their data. Having it on a Microsoft server is probably better protected against disasters than having it on their own computers. Microsoft will have this backed up, or at least one would hope they would. But we already know that some people DO NOT backup....so it's probably no worse.

I like being able to get to all of my files easily, no matter what device I am on. Doesn't matter if I am at work, at home, on one of my Mac's, at my dad's house, on my cell phone or my iPad. That's just super convenient.

And as I said in another post here, my sisters house burned down. Having copies of her data in the house didn't help out in this situation.

I get it, some people will never trust having their data somewhere else. I personally am willing to accept that risk in trade for having less worries that I will never lose it and I can get to it no matter where I am.

Good for you, I do not have a Microsoft 365 subscription and I also have about 12 TB 's of SSD & Hard drive storage. This is what is great about Windows, one can use all of the MS stuff & others can do what they want. There is no one size fits all method and everyone has a right to use what they want to.

I get it, some people will never trust having their data somewhere else.
For those people i recommend encrypt the data first with VeraCrypt container and upload the container to the cloud.
Even if they get a data breach or dont trust the provider.. the data is useless for the person that might get their hand on it.

I use the zero-trust approach, as what is secure today, might be a CVE tomorrow............. or if it became a breach and it end up on darknet.
So for cloud, i use Proton as it is encrypted so not even they can access it even with a warrant.. on top i use encrypted containers, just in case its a future CVE to bypass the encryption in their servers

I wasn't saying anybody else should use it, but was rather answering the question about why anybody would ever store their data in a cloud location that they don't own.

I too have lots of local storage, but I don't feel it necessary to keep copies of my OS, or my ISO files, my virtual machines, my video games, etc out on the cloud. Based on the stuff that I have, that I consider data that I want to have backed up, I have about 250GB of my 1TB of space used on OneDrive.

My Microsoft 365 sub for me is a no-brainer. I have PC's and Mac's, I have a wife and 2 kids and my dad who all use the subscription. For about the price of 2 tanks of gas a year, we all have Office, we all have 1TB each of onedrive space, and I have additional co-pilot usage as the owner of my sub. It works for me, but everybody has different wants/needs.

I have all my backups and important papers stored inside a safe inside a corten steel shipping container on my property. The safe offers a 2000 degree F for 60 minutes, so I feel pretty well about this, but I guess any breach is possible.
