Having to Upgrade my PC

My existing Desktop PC build I'm having to upgrade as it can't support Win 11.

The existing OS is Win 10 Enterprise.

I have purchased a new CPU, Motherboard and Ram.

The intention for the moment is to install the above and reinstall my existing SSD which has the WIN 10 OS on it.

Once I have re-installed my existing SSD do I just turn the computer on/boot and I will see my familiar desktop or is there more to it?

Will the new MB come with a disk with software/drivers to install?

Once the build has been completed and everything running ok I will then upgrade to Win 11.

99% possible that putting your existing disk on the new hardware will load Windows without issues and install new drivers. But you will have to activate Windows and Office and possibly other applications again.

In all likelihood, yes, after you plug the SSD into the new system it should be able to detect the new hardware. Windows does a very good job of that and Windows update will also probably update a lot of drivers.

Also, yes, the new MB should come with drivers. But one of the items included will typically be a program that goes up to the web site for the MB manufacturer and it will detect what the latest version of drivers are and download and install those for you.

Note that at first Windows will probably show as unactivated. You may need to choose the option to troubleshoot activation problems and tell it that you replaced hardware so that it can transfer the license to this system.

IMPORTANT: If your old system was a home built system, then the above should work. However, if the old system was a big name like Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc. that shipped with Windows, that license would be an OEM license. OEM licenses are not transferable.

As always, I recommend making a good backup before doing this just to be on the safe side.

LOL, we seem to have posted almost same instant.

@spapakons makes a great point that I missed: Licensing of other programs. Some programs require that you first deactivate your license before moving to a new machine. Just one example of this is Macrium Reflect. So, make sure to deactivate any such apps before moving to the new system.

This is yet another reason that I suggest a good backup, preferably a disk image backup. I have done that where I forgot to deactivate a license but I was able to restore my backup, then deactivate, then move the drive again.

Thanks, I often have found in the past with OS upgrades I have to either reinstall or reactivate other applications, I've accepted it as part of new terrority, a thing to be done.

Thanks, I have started a new thread on activation Do I require a new Activation Key I'm attempting to try keep things seperate but maybe I'm confusing things.

Be that as is may, yes my PC was home build from the case inwards and it's served me well and I would have continued to allow it to chug away but upgrade were required if I want to upgrade to Win 11.

I have been tidying and backing up like crazy, wow! the clutter but then I am an untidy PC user, which drives my children/GK nuts but I know where most things are but then they don't have 10 and 11 forums on my side---but they have a point, I'm untidy.

I will create a disk image, I've done so once before, a while ago, forgotten what programme I used but needed to do so to transfer OS from old HD to existing SSD.

Some help required please.

Got around to installing new MB and almost at the final leg to discover my existing aged Corsair 400w PSU has 2 x 4 pin EPS connectors not 8pin as the B550 Board has, not an issue but has delayed me.

Meanwhile I've got myself a little muddled with some front hub/power connectors and exactly where to connect them on the Board?

I think the hub pins run along bottom edge of board, ( circled in Red ) but on which pins, in what order do I connect the hub/power connectors on? ( see images ).

If it is the default, confirm with User Manual, top left is the power led +, next to it is the power led -, next is the power +, next the power -. At bottom left, exactly below the power led + is the HDD led +, next to it is the HDD led -, next is the reset + and next the reset -.

I tried to lookup the ASUS B550 user guide but there are several variants. Below is from the user guide for the B550F. This may not be correct for your system. Go to ASUS web site to check for your variant. The point is there will be a page that shows what connects to each pin. It will look something like this:

Again, make sure to verify using the correct user guid for your MB.

Thanks spapakons, new MB, no instruction manual inside so am flying blind a bit, the Boards all done, cpu, memory installed, having to wait for a converter cable for the PSU EPS connector, didn't see that one coming.

Where do these connect on the board.

The Blue USB 3 front hub cable connector fitted on to a card into a slot on the old MB, there is nothing on the new MB that says USB 3, at least none I can see.

Mean time do the 3 connectors connect to the same Board pins?

The Blue USB 3 front hub cable connector fitted on to a card into a slot on the old MB, there is nothing on the new MB that says USB 3, at least none I can see.

Just plug it into the USB 3.2 header shown below.
There should be a little notch on the connector and on the motherboard port.

Make sure you get the notch right. 8-)
