Having to Upgrade my PC


It is labelled on the board but the the letters are microscopic and dull grey They dont make it easy..

Yes... he can use two "four pin" connectors to feed the eight pin motherboard CPU power connector. :-)


Those 4 pin connectors are "keyed". So is the 8 pin motherboard connector.
Use an LED flashlight to look carefully at them.
Make sure you have them in... properly.


Here you can see the different "shapes" of the connector holes.

I wonder whether they are the twinned 4pin/8pin plugs?

If they are, they need to be inserted into the 8pin EPS header in the correct left/right order, because of the way they nest together. (I doubt that it matters electrically.)

Just a thought. I would think about upgrading the power supply as well. 400 Watts is not much these days, and if the OP is going to get a discrete GPU for the PC, they will have to upgrade anyway to get it to work. If the power supply is old, then it is unlikely pushing 400 Watts anyway, as supplies do degrade over time. (I forget the figure to calculate it but IIRC, the loss in power is about 25 to 50% after a number of years due to capacitor aging).

I would recommend something like 500 to 600 Watts. More if you are planning to buy a discrete graphics card. And don't cheap out. Buy the best supply that you can afford in your wattage range. You don't have to go nuts, but buy a good supply. I have an EVGA supply that has been awesome. I also recommend Seasonic supplies. They make solid stuff.

I found out the hard way that while the PCIe connectors for your graphics card will fit in the 8 pin connectors on the motherboard, they are pinned out wrong. I blew an old CPU and motherboard a few months ago by plugging one of those connectors to my motherboard's CPU 8 pin power receptacle. Much smoke, and MOSFETs went flying everywhere as they popped.

I learned the hard way. I should have built an extender for the CPU power cable (it wouldn't reach), but I thought "Hey. This will fit."

Famous last words...

400 is plenty for what the op wants. I use a 400 out of preference.

Unless he wants something newer for efficiency but it will go way past the £200 budget which he has already spent.

I doubt that this applies to the OP, but there's another possible problem with PSUs with modular connectors.

Some of the 8pin ones have the same connectors at both ends. But the pinouts are not the same. The cables can't be reversed.

I'm not sure that the result would be an Irwin Allen production, but it's not recommended.

I forget in which forum I read of someone doing just that. (It may have been this one.) I don't know if the poster ever completed the thread. Probably too embarrassed to do that.

Yep, yep. You want to make sure all "nine" screws are in place properly.

I'm on a tight budget, would like to spend around £200 to include MB, CPU, CPU Fan, Ram, I guess anything I purchase will be a huge leap to what I have.

A guy brought in his build to a Computer shop I was in looking around. The tech took side panel off and said (there's no standoffs under that board) I just cringed when I heard that. Really felt sorry for that young fella!

I wondered where the "£200" figure came from. I presume that "Jaylob4" didn't manage to buy all that stuff (MB, CPU, RAM, etc.) for that total.

I can't recall my trepidation level when I first started assembling desktop PCs, back in the late 90s. Maybe I should be more sympathetic.

If you want to be persnickety, some cases use a pin in a central location, rather than a screw. (Makes it easier to position the board.) 8 screws, then.

I don't know unless he used his own self tapping screws or something. I was wondering that also . I didn't walk over there he looked like he felt bad enough already

The Technician should be more kind since he was novice, not expert, plus more importantly, he was the Client. Nowadays a bad Google comment (feedback) or even worse a bad comment in trading platforms such as the Greek www.skroutz.gr where we compare prices, can do real damage to a shop.

mobo was on special offer at that time.

amd have just released a couple more cpus for am4.
