I know this is a very basic question but my knowledge is basic too!!! I've been setting up a 2nd hand laptop, using Windows 11 and Brave browser. There is no on/off icon on the home screen. I know I can use the physical button but I'd like the icon and the old settings was it? It's had a factory reset and I dont know where to start. Any simple explanation would be very greatly appreciated.

Are you asking for a desktop shutdown shortcut?

Steps to Create a Shutdown Shortcut:
  • Create the Shortcut: Right-click an empty area on your desktop, select New, then Shortcut.
  • Enter Command: In the location box, type exactly: shutdown /s /t 0.
    • Note: /s means shutdown, and /t 0 sets the time delay to zero seconds.
  • Name and Finish: Click Next, type a name (e.g., "Shutdown"), and click Finish.
  • Change Icon (Optional): Right-click the new shortcut, select Properties, go to the Shortcut tab, and click Change Icon. Select a power button icon, then click OK.
  • Pin to Taskbar (Optional): You can drag this new icon onto your taskbar for one-click access.

Ghot has helpfully illustrated a Start menu in post #4 but the Start menu does vary by Windows 11 Version.
Which Windows 11 Version are you on? Find out by entering the command WinVer in Terminal [which you'll find in your Start menu].

To avoid misunderstandings, post a screenshot of what you mean by 'home screen '.

If you had a factory reset, you are likely to have been reverted to the Windows 11 version that was current when your computer was made. Check Settings, Updates to see if it can update you.

Her description reminded me of the shutdown option in Windows 8 when you drag the mouse from top right to bottom right to show the charms column. This in Windows 11 is at the start menu, bottom right, as others mentioned. You can also create a shutdown button. Another way is to close or minimize all applications, click on the desktop to bring it in focus and then press ALT+F4. This will give you the "traditional" shutdown menu as shown on post #6. Then you can select shutdown from there.

Aside from the app that @dacrone posted, Winaero Tweaker can also assist.

Create shortcuts to power options for the desktop (can drag to taskbar)
Be warned, the default icons are ugly and not uniformed, should be able to change them.

This shows only for touch capable devices when you hold down the power button. If you press it briefly it only switches off the screen. You have to hold it over 2 seconds to see the "Slide to shutdown your PC" message. For regular laptops without a touchscreen pressing several seconds the on/off button forces shutdown (like when system has hang), so it is not recommended. Pressing it briefly goes into sleep mode (aka standby).

    Legacy MBR installation, no TPM, no Secure Boot, no WDDM 2.0 graphics drivers, no SSE4.2, cannot get more unsupported ;) This is only my test laptop. I had installed Windows 11 here before upgrading my main PC. For my main PC I use everyday see my 2nd system specs.

I've never seen that. I'm just talkin about pinning SlideToShutDown.exe to the Taskbar.

Click on the Start button, The 4 blue squares. This is either centre or left on the bottom bar.
Bottom line of Start Panel far right > click on Circle with line at 12 O'clock position(Power) > Circle with line(Shut down) click on that.
