How desktop works?

I have about 60 icons on my desktop that I decided to organize so I can find things easier. I got it all set up and all was well for a few days but perhaps it was the last update, I'm not sure, but all the icons got scrambled, just scattered all over the desktop in no particular order. The only items selected in "view" is small icons and show desktop icons. Nothing is checked under "sort icons". I don't see anything under "display settings" that allows me to lock the desktop so it doesn't get changed, but there are so many settings in a long menu that perhaps I just don't know which ones might control that. Help appreciated. Thanks. Larry

Good discussion. The icons getting rearranged has always been a problem for me as well but I never bothered to go looking for an app to address this. I'll definitely be trying these apps.

I had the same issue, that's when I was tinkering with configurations on a number of computers and constantly have the icons scrambled, I was pushed over the edge and went looking for solutions. :LOL:

I have 45 Icons on my Desktop. View > Small icons > Align icons to grid.
Using KISS principles these are functional groups with spaces between them. Part of the reason for that is the arrangement can change due to different Desktop resolutions being used typically with old Apps maybe not exiting cleanly, changing icon sizes and so forth.
i.e. Group spaces minimises any Icon shifts, without installing system modding Apps.

Never been due to Windows updates in the last 12 years.

The good news is that apparently the 'improved' Start pane of Windows 11 is being changed in the forthcoming updates, this I think will be useful to most people.
