How do I get windows explorer to default to the desktop folder?

That's what I just outlined in (the rest of) my post ????? I don't think you can change the existing File Explorer other than how Windows wants you to use

Confused mixed terminology - as set up in Windows, it's File Explorer

Windows Explorer is just the old name for the program explorer.exe, which is now called File Explorer. There is no actual program called "file manager", that's just a generic term for multiple 3rd party options.

Note your displayed entry says Windows Explorer

You can't do this/that with the default File Explorer icon as installed by Windows (which, I believe, is what the OP is referring). It's one of Windows precious "don't you dare touch me" protected installations. That's why you have to recreate the new shortcut (Start menu/Start pinned/Taskbar pinned) as a new shortcut to explorer.exe
