How do I modify the password and screen lock settings?

I have 23H3 Win 11 Pro 64bit and I don't have a password set up to log in. It goes straight to the desktop when the machine boots up.

1.) What I'd like to do is be able to have a password set up to log in.

2.) But what I'd also like it to do is when the screen goes dark (or screen saver) after a few minutes, and I step away from the machine, and then I come back, touch the mousepad (or move the mouse), I want the desktop to come back. I don't want to constantly type my password in to unlock it everytime I step away.

Sleep mode and hibernation mode are turned off so the computer is running in the background doing the tasks I need it to do. Only the screen goes dark after a few minutes.

I just want the password enabled when I boot or re-boot the machine after being turned off for awhile. I never leave my machine on all the time.

Any help would be most appreciated, thank you.

Also... this will allow you to have the "locked" (forced to enter password), when you want, but not always.
Like... when the grand-kids are coming to visit.






If you choose the "Lock computer and turn off display" option, when someone wakes the computer they will need to know the password to log on. This is a one time setting, for times when you don't want anyone accessing your computer.
Once you or someone logs on with the password, this option is OFF, until the next time you choose it from the context menu.

Set your password via Cmd, computer management or settings app (whatever you prefer to use) and then enable the below in advanced power options and set it to ‘No’

Turn off the display after say 10 minutes, but I don't want the computer locked.

About two years ago, I posted the same request over in the Windows 10 forum


The menus and settings for Windows 11 are different so I'm looking for the same results.

In Control Panel > Power Options, you can set how long it waits before turning off the display.
You can also immediately turn off the display with that context menu tutorial.

The only time I use the "Lock computer and turn off display" is when I'm leaving the apartment, and don't want the landlord to come in and be able to access the computer.

It's just a context menu option IF you need it occasionally.

It may well be that you already have a password but you enabled automatic signin at startup. (For sure you have a password already if you use a MS account.) You can disable automatic signin at startup using option 1 here. Do steps 1 & 2, then go to step 4

Note: Sign in on wakeup and signin when windows starts are 2 different settings. The tutorial @Dacron gave you handles wakeup. This one handles startup.

The computer is running and processing jobs I need to do. Hibernation and Sleep need to be disabled. How do I fully do that?

I'm not too worried about anybody walking in so the "Lock computer and turn off display" option can be disabled. If I was at work with nosy people around, that would be a different story, but I don't have to worry about that at home.

I just want to come back, wiggle the mouse and have the display turn on so I can see the status of the jobs going, without having to enter a password all the time.
