How Do You Disable Windows 11 Automatic Updates in Windows 11 Home

My main desktop computer is running Windows 10 Ultimate, and you can use Group Policy Editor to permanently disable Windows Updates. And it is very simple to use the Group Policy Editor on the ultimate edition to set it to permanently disable automatic updates.

A little over a month ago, I purchased a laptop that came preinstalled with Windows 11 home edition. I followed the procedure on the internet, to install the Group Policy Editor package on Windows 11 Home, but Windows 11 ignores most or a lot of the settings in Group Policy Editor on the "Home" edition of Windows 11. Since it ignores most of the settings in the Group Policy Editor, on the "home" edition. I need expert advice on how to disable the automatic updates on the home edition.

Can one of the experts here tell me, how to permanently disable automatic updates in Windows 11 home? I am not saying I never update, but I prefer to chose to do it completely manually and on the dates I choose. So I want to permanently disable the automatic updates on Windows 11 home.

I tried most of these, except for the metered connection, and they don't work.

Disabling the Windows Update service has had no effect. This use to work in Windows 7 and previous versions. Windows 11 has a "Windows Update Medic Service" which you can not disable, and when you disable the Windows Update, it will still download and install updates. Tried this in both Windows 10 and Windows 11, and disabling the service doesn't seem to work anymore in both Windows 10 and Windows 11.

The WindowsUpdate registry setting does NOT exist on Windows 11 Home edition. The registry editing trick does not work, since there is no ‘HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU’ setting in the registry in Windows 11 Home edition.

Both the registry edit trick and the group policy editor, does not work, because there is no registry setting for WindowsUpdate on the Home edition.

no such edition as Windows 10 Ultimate.

Win 7 ultimate was upgraded to Win 10 Pro.

Does setting windows update service to disabled still work in 11? I haven't tried it myself but it worked in 10 (You would have to allow the service each time you manually run WU though)

Yes, you can disable the Windows Update service in Windows 11.

@FreeBooter I know it can be disabled but in Home Version I didn't know if it would renable itself at boot since MS is so hard-line about updates. None of my machines run Home so I couldn't test it.

You can still create the registry setting (Btw, I'm also on Win11 Home), as follows:

Copy the following path in the Registry Editor’s address bar and then press Enter:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows
WindowsUpdate should be there (it is for me), if not you can create it:
Right-click on the Windows folder, select New > Key. Name it WindowsUpdate and press Enter.

Now, right click on WindowsUpdate and again create a new key. Name it AU and press Enter.
Right click anywhere on the right panel and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.
Name the key NoAutoUpdate and press Enter.
Double click on it and change the value from 0 to 1.
Close the Registry Editor and restart your PC.

Hopefully this will do the trick. Let me know if it worked.

What is point of updating to W11 if you choose not to update? It is pretty obvious initial releases will be buggy and updates will be required.

I am trying the meter method to see if it works. My Windows 11 is new. but has seen 5-6 GB size change on Windows update. try to stop it.
