Windows 11 Home
Hello,
I just got a new Lenovo Windows 11 Home laptop. With my old Windows 7 laptop, if I closed the lid, it would go to sleep and wake up upon opening the lid. On this NEW Windows 11 laptop, if I close the lid, it seems to go to sleep, but if I open the lid after a few hours, I have to push the Power Button to wake it up, BUT it seems to be turning on as if it was completely shut down. It will not stay in sleep mode.
I am not sure when all this occurs. Power Settings are set to Sleep for both plugged in and battery for Power Button and Closing the Lid.
Hibernate After for Plugged In is preset at 180 minutes.
Is Hibernate the same as shutting down and is that what I am experiencing?
Will it go into Hibernate with the lid closed?
TIA

Yes, that is what you’re experiencing. I always disable hibernate on my laptops, but that’s just my preference. You can use the registry to show the hidden “unattended sleep timeout” and set that to zero to disable that too.

Hibernate is "Copy memory to HD and then Turn Off Power".
So when it "Wakes", it will spend time to copy the contents back into memory to restore your last session.

Technical explanation. RAM does not hold contents without power. "Sleep" is still partially ON to supply a little power and stuff to keep the computer alive. Hybernate saves all the contents into HD to get around this.

Complaints about either hibernate or sleep, now number in the thousands.
Since day one, the whole concept has been full of bugs.
Your whole computer experience will be better if you turn OFF Hibernate and set sleep to "NEVER".

And when you're done using your computer, like any other appliance, turn it OFF!
That has worked for me for 40 years. And I've never had to contribute to the many posts about Hibernate or Sleep failures.

Merry Christmas

The issue is that Laptop users were often some type of office worker that tries to save as much time as possible. Therefore they need this balance between speed of resume and battery.

In a Desktop, pretty much everyone I knew who seriously used a computer would never shut it off to begin with apart from some sort of update or site shutdown. But now with the advent of OLED screen burn, that's not really going to be an option anymore unless you trust the screen saver and screen sleep (which is a whole 'nother doesn't work thread). Or...we're going to see a lot of screen burn OLED monitors for low prices on ebay in the near future. :)
