Just to add, all you really need to do is add your number, then turn on the other two options.
Your Microsoft account can be added to Authenticator by clicking the plus symbol at the top of the app. (Or you can scan a code via Authenticator to add it, my opinion is it’s easier to just add it via the plus symbol)

As Microsoft now has your mobile number, it should be straight forward as it sends the Authenticator codes etc to your mobile number which has Authenticator installed

If you’ve installed the Authenticator App on your mobile yourself, don’t get caught in the Microsoft Account loop of being told to download it as you've already installed it

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I have no idea what you’ve done or why the app is taking you there.. Is your camera lens dirty? Scratches? Where was the code you scanned, on what site?

Sure, but I don’t see a need for a 2nd email account to log into Microsoft. Or are you using “the” Microsoft account to get codes for itself?
Text codes are fine.
Microsoft Authenticator I use because it’s not just for Microsoft and use multiple accounts/forums/social sites/stores etc etc

I set up my MS account using an email address from a provider other than Microsoft. You don't have to use an Outlook address, it could be gmail, Yahoo, or any other email service. That is the only email address linked to my MS account and the one that MS send all account-related communications to.

This is just an ordinary email address that I can access quite independently of Microsoft. I could have just stuck with that as the only means of 2FA, but I added the phone as a 2nd method. In fact, I had found that 2FA by email can be a little unreliable, sometimes it took a long time to receive the authentication email. SMS text seems more reliable and is virtually instant.

Yes, but all kinds of problem can ensue. it is better to register Outlook and then login with 3rd party email.

Using SMS as a recovery is a terrible idea, especially with phonelink. MS really messed up there.
