How to change default sizes of icons, images, etc.

Hi all, first post here. I go back to Windows 3.1 and know a few things, but not an expert. This is the second machine I've had with W11. I'm old and getting tired of fighting with these things constantly.

I have a new ASUS laptop and have a problem with viewed sizes. I've had this problem before with previous machines and fixed them, but not sure about this machine. I think the problems listed below are all from some setting in Windows that isn't right.

Some text and icons on certain apps are very small, some are okay. I've monkeyed with the "Scale" (now set to 150%) and "Display resolution" (at 1920 x 1080 "recommended") and if I vary from those, things just get worse.

Example: I create an image with the open-source image creator, GIMP, and when I post that image online with the Firefox browser (or just view it with an image viewer) the image is much larger than what is shown in GIMP. I had this exact problem with a previous laptop but don't remember how I fixed it -- if I ever did. Also related to this, I think: The tools on the GIMP tool pallet are ridiculously tiny. I've been using GIMP for around 15 years on numerous machines and have never had this problem.

Also: I've used TK8 Sticky Notes on several machines but never had this issue: When the note is minimized the header text is tiny. I enlarged the size of the text within the note but that doesn't change the title size. I suspect this is all the same problem with some Windows setting.

How do I fix this? My previous laptop, a Dell with W11, did not have this problem.

1. I gave you ten rep points, just for filling out your computer specs.
2. I'm not a laptop person, and my eyes still seem to work OK.
3. I run my screen at 100% and at it's natural resolution of 2560 x 1600

I do notice that some things appear too small, but I just memorize what icons are for which programs.
Then, it doesn't really matter if I can see them perfectly clearly.

I realize this is not the answer you're looking for, but there are plenty of regulars on here that do run laptops... and probably have solutions.

Try to be patient... someone will come along that knows laptops, and also has issues with the various sizes of certain things.

4. Step 4: Input the Target Width and Height Values. ...
5. Step 5: Export the File.

A good standard size for images on the internet is a 16:9 ratio. Around 1280 x 760 or 1800 wide x …
It really depends on what you’re wanting to use the image for and of course it depends on the original ratio.
What you see isn’t always what you get in image apps, so you need to ensure your resizing or output settings are correct before uploading the image.


As you’ve also posted this on BleepingComputers, perhaps they’ll have an answer re your TK8. I couldn’t find one.

Ive just installed TK8 Sticky Notes.
I found that changing the settings for the note has no effect on the header title.
Therefore it is resolution related.

Have you checked that you have the correct updated drivers installed for your VivoBook??

Please update your computer specs to include the exact model of your ASUS

Do you have the MyASUS application? It can check your drivers & Firmware for you.

Another thought.

You can go into Start > Settings > Accessibility and click on TEXT SIZE and adjust text size. See if that is any help to you.

For icons: Right-click on (or press and hold) the desktop, point to View, and then select Large icons, Medium icons, or Small icons.

+1 for WinAeroTweaker which is how I set my font sizes

I right-click the Desktop, click Display settings and set the Resolution at the Recommenced size then set the Scale at 125% or 150%. Main thing I keep in mind is whether to use the 16:9 ratio or 16:10 ratio, width : height.

Hi Andy, I have 2 Asus laptops (different models) and have had trouble like you have.
I thought at first it was an automatic setting that changed at night then again at daylight.
At that time I had Malwarebytes Premium for free as a Royal Band of Scotland customer.
Their offer ended and my new AV program became Bitdefender, excellent program.
As mentioned by another menber, I also went to Settings > Accessibility > Text Size and set it at Size 130
I also have as my image a portable program, this version works perfectly compared with it's laters version.

I think the images appear larger in browser due to scaling, they are not actually larger. You can reduce zoom to 90% or less and see if they appear right. This will also affect the size of text. Regarding the size of icons in Gimp, you can set the scaling independently from the global Windows scaling. Right-click on the Gimp shortcut, select Properties, go to Compatibility and click on Change High DPI Settings. I am not sure what to do next. Any other fellow? Also have a look at Gimp Preferences, maybe you can set scaling from there.

I got GIMP icons fixed, but not headers in TK8 StickyNotes.

That's normal for posting images online. If I take screenshots on a computer that is set to 100% scaling, then everything looks as expected online. If I use a computer set to a higher scaling, I first have to resize the image before posting. For example, if I take the screenshot on a computer set to 125% scaling, I'll then resize the image to 80%, using Paint, before posting online.

I hadn't thought of that, my primary monitor is at 100% scaling. Good to know, thanks for sharing.

Tip: Screen scaling affects image size in a browser as well. If you have more than 100% scaling the image is zoomed accordingly, even if your browser zoom is at 100%. Reducing the zoom in the browser makes the image smaller but affects quality. So if you want to take a screenshot of a website that doesn't allow you to download the image (I won't go into details here, those who do that got the point), you must set screen scaling to 100% to maximise image quality. Moreover, in those said sites (you know which) the image usually is much larger than the screen resolution. Talking a screenshot you are always limited to the screen resolution. So to get the maximum possible image quality you must set the maximum possible screen resolution, even if this is virtual (not native) and keep screen scaling at 100%. In Nvidia graphics the term is Super Resolution and is activated by enabling DSR Factors in 3D Settings of nVidia Control Panel and then choosing the virtual resolution in Display, Change Resolution. If your monitor's native resolution is 1920x1080 you can double that up to 3840x2160. Not bad. Intel and AMD also have this feature but I don't remember the respective terms, sorry.
