Solved How to remove tabs from the new notepad?


Thanks! That worked. Well it didn't make them open with it, but it allowed me to set it to do so.

One thing that I like about the new notepad is that you can tear away a tab to open it in a separate window. Likewise, you can join separate notepad windows together to make a tabbed set. I just wish that this capability was present in File Explorer as well.

I do that with browsers, but notepad and windows explorer (I refuse to use the new name, just like I still call it Windscale) are things I use briefly and I want each thong seperate.

Note that setting this to "Open in separate window" will also spawn a new window when dragging/dropping files into Notepad.

I loved Notepad for its ability to just replace the open file with whatever I dragged into it. Now with the new Notepad, I have to actively CTRL+W old documents/tabs.

Back in my day.... we didn't use no tabs. We'd walk 10 miles in the snow, (uphill - both ways), to get to our next 150 lb. computer screen. One window open on each screen.

Just click the gear way over on the right in a new Notepad window, and choose Open in new window. That'll do 'er for ya.
Note: you can also open a second doc in a second tab and then drag that tab out of the current window to make two separate windows.
Notepad has you covered, Jayson.

Interesting. I LOVE the tabs in notepad. I frequently have 5+ notepads open and being able to join then together in tabs is great. Besides, if you don't like it, you can always tear tabs away to turn them into separate windows.

i was under the impression that he did this in all caps to actually make fun of the person he quoted. I don't think he actually felt the same way that tabs were terrible. But I may have misread.


I love the tabs in notepad. And I love the new autosave in notepad. 2 features that I had for a long time with Notepad++. Still have a lot more features that I use regularly in Notepad++, over Notepad.....but for a simple place to jot down something so I don't forget it, Windows notepad is nice and IMHO better with tab support.
