HP All-In-One printer issue

I did not intentionally install a printer when I got a new Notebook now running Win11 Pro but it picked up my HP OfficeJet Pro 9015 printer and scanner. So far it works fine for printing and the Windows Fax and Scan works fine, just doesn't show in the Apps listing so when I got it open by using Search I added it to the Pinned list on the Start button.

Sum total of what HP added to the Start menu:

Have issues sometimes with my HP Envy 4520, when i goto Print Wirelessly, it says error cannot print, i assume the scanner portion wouldn't work either, unforuately out of USB ports on my system available to plug it into, only free ones is a couple usb 3.0 ports lol.

This is on Windows 11 Pro, though on Windows 10 Pro i had same issue at times, so maybe something in the printer wireless adapter i'm guessing or something

Set the printer to a static IP address. In my case I set it to 192.168.1.254 There's a HP YT video on how if needed.

I also disable auto off and it has a stable connection.

HP seem to install HP smart as standard - and it's the app for connecting your printer. Although I had to do mine manually. The app seems to work quite well. Previously I used to download the software from HP via their web address download. Can't quite imagine how it connected automatically - unless maybe you were signed into an HP account?

Adding, the OfficeJet driver is identified in Windows Fax and Scan as a Microsoft WSD device. Also Win11 picked up my HP LaserJet Pro MFP printer but not its scanner but I really don't need it yet as my Win11 Notebook is seldom in the same room as the MFP [hard to change pages].

HP reached out to me. I mentioned that I allowed their tech guys to remotely help me and they failed so like you, I don't need my scanner just yet and MAYBE I'll have some extra money in March or April before taxes to get a new one. Still seems strange to me that the printer works fine using the WiFi but the Scanner does not. Really odd set of drivers.

I think this is not a new issue - I have always had problems getting my HP scanner to work since Windows 7. It has been a real headache. Sometimes it will transmit the first scan then nothing afterwards.

Not sure where your this WSD is or what it stands for. Can you be a bit more specific about where to look for this function. Is it in that little window right on the All In One or is there an address I need to go through my browser to find this function like I would my router?

THanks so much

The attached picture is for reference, as it's for Samsung Printer Web interface... WSD is part of the Networking protocol.
WSD (Web Services for Devices) was designed to make life easy when it comes to installing printers.
WSD is not a port but a 'port monitor'. WSD devices communicate using a series of SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) messages over UDP and HTTPs BUT NOT local IP addresses.
Reality is Windows plays musical chairs with ip address therefore I was constantly having to use printer diagnostics to find it again, turning WSD off stopped this, and I have not had any issues since.

I could not find any specific HP settings pictures to show you where in the menus :(

I'm not sure if this is as one off but after removing all the drivers that HP gave me and I just installed the printer using what ever MS threw at the printer now it scans with no issues.

I have a HP Office Jet Pro 8720 AIO, connected wireless. It was originally installed in Win 10. When I upgraded to Win 11, there was no new driver, that I'm aware of, and everything works OK in Win 11.

although HP themselves released updated driver software package for your OfficeJet Pro 8720 in late November 2021 (v40.15.1230)

HP also released updated driver software packs for my HP envy 4500 and HP envy photo 7800 series printers in late November 2021 as well, so I was no longer using the latest drivers & software for these printers and I had to remove/uninstall the old versions before installing the new ones from HP

edit - I think setting these printers to "static" IP addresses might be a better solution - when my HP printers are connected wirelessly, they sometimes connect to random "private" IP addresses beginning with 169.254.x.x instead of IP addresses beginning with 192.168.x.x. that's another thing to check with when these printers are connected thru wifi - check carefully the IP addresses that they are connected to on the printer's hardware control panel themselves to see if they're connected to anything in 192.168.x.x.

@RAMWolff - although I don't have direct experience of your printer model I have used (and abused) HP printers/scanners/all-in-ones for years. One scanner I had was really well used - dozens of scans every day for about 2 years - and it developed the same symptoms as yours. The cause was that one of the cores in the little ribbon cable that connects the scanner head to the chassis of the machine had gone open circuit. The fault only manifested itself when the scanning head got to a certain point in the scan then it would stop and the computer would spend ages trying to reconnect to it. My local Epson repair centre (sadly long since closed down) knew what the problem was as soon as I described it to them.

This may not be relevant but I though I would mention it anyway. Happy hunting :)
