I want to transfer the files directly from mobile to pendrive. enquiries revealed that smartphones have different types of usb charging ports and support different versions of usb A ports. for eg. moto g4 has usb b and usb a port, and redmi note pro has usb c and usb a port. I also note that redmi supports usb 3.0, where as moto g32 a recent version only support usb 2.0 which is slower in data transfer.
Now the confusion arises when buying a common otg cable .
I think that adapter having both usb b and usb c on one hand and the usb a port supporting 3.0 version would be better choice.
i do not know, how to search for this kind of adapter in online stores.
I also presume that usb a having 3.0 version would be backward compatible to usb 2.0 versions also.
Please give me clue to how to buy a common adapter that has both usb c and usb b ports and a common usb 3.0 support a port adapter

If you're looking for one cable solution to fit them all, you're most likely going to have a lot of problems finding one.

At the moment I only use USB-C to USB-A 3.0 dongle as any other connector is pretty much obsolete.

Most difficult will be to find a one fits them all solution that support USB3.0 and has both Micro-B2.0 and 3.0 plugs. You can plug a Micro-B 2.0 plug into a 3.0 connector but you can not plug a Micro-B 3.0 plug into a 2.0 port.

What I would do is to buy 2 dongles, one with USB-C to USB-A3.0 and another one with Micro-B to USB-A2.0 and live with the slower speeds on phones with Micro-B3.0 ports. This way you can transfer files from pretty much any phone except iPhone which is an entirely different story.

jraju,

These diagrams should help you get the terminology right and then you should be able to search successfully.
What you need is commonplace.

This article should also be helpful.

buying a common otg cable
I would expect your smartphone to have either a USB Micro-B or a USB-C connector.
- I have never seen a phone with a USB-A port.
- USB Micro-B connections are quite likely to die out over the next few years in favour of USB-C connections.
- I agree that whatever you get should claim to be USB3 so you get faster data transfers. I urge you to study customer reviews to check comments about speed before you buy anything.
If you want to cover all your existing & potential future smartphones, I suggest getting a USB-C [male, phone end] to USB-A [male, computer/power end] cable and
either
- a USB Micro-B [male, phone end] to USB-A [male, computer/power end] cable, or
- a USB-C [female] to USB Micro-B [male] adapter to fit onto the end of a USB-C to USB-A cable.

transfer the files directly from mobile to pendrive
You can use the same cables for this job but you might prefer adapters [again, USB3 for speed] to fit into the phones:
For that you'll need a USB-A [female] to USB-C [male] adapter and one of these to cover the Micro-B type of smartphone connection
- a USB-A [female] to USB Micro-B [male] adapter, or
- a USB-C [female] to USB Micro-B [male] adapter to fit onto the end of a USB-A [female] to USB-C [male] adapter, or
You can also buy USB memory sticks that have a USB-C [male] connector at one end and a USB Micro-B [male] connector at the other end so you have some flexibility. I imagine that other combinations are also available such as USB-A [male] connector at one end and a USB-C [male] connector at the other end

Best of luck,
Denis

You might also wish to note the loops in the last ones. You can put string through them to tie them to, for example, a key ring so you do not lose them. An alternative is to place string anywhere on the adapter body & loop some narrow sticky tape around it.

All the best,
Denis

Hi, slice..
Thanks for your clues.
But would it not be right, if I opt for a micro B , ie, usb B to usb A of version 3.00 for older smart phones and
typec otg to usb A of version for latest mobile phones of latest models.
My reasoning: I think and please confirm, that usb A male would be supporting both usb 2.0 and usb 3.0 versions of phone port.i.e backward compatibility. Type micro B for older phones and type c for latest phones .
Please say how would i check if the cable or adapter is supporting usb A 3.0 version.
Or micro B only supports usb 2.0 version only

To connect a USB flash drive to the Moto G4, what you need is a cable (or adapter piece, but I recommend using a short cable so as to not accidentally break the Micro USB port on the phone so easily...) USB 2.0 Micro-B plug to USB 2.0 Type-A female receptacle.

For transferring data between a computer and the Moto G4, use a separate cable that is longer (like, 1.2m or ~4ft.) and that has a USB 2.0 Type-A plug instead of a USB 2.0 Type-A female receptacle. For charging the Moto G4, if you want the fastest charging speed you should use the original Turbo Charger that came included with this phone. Else, use a Qualcomm Quick Charge (QC) 2.0 compatible wall charger (or QC 3.0, as QC 3.0 is backward compatible with QC 2.0) such as the Anker PowerPort+1, for example, and use it in combination with the (USB 2.0 Micro-B plug to USB 2.0 Type-A plug) cable. This phone can also be charged by plugging such a cable into a computer or USB hub device, but the charging will typically be very slow (up to 0.5A charging current). However, some USB ports on a computer or USB hub can support the USB BC 1.2 specification (up to 1.5A charging current).

Since the Moto G4 only has USB 2.0, choosing a different cable/adapter with USB 3.0 will gain you nothing.

The trick is in looking at the MicroB connector:

You can not fit a MicroB3.0 male connector into a MicroB2.0 female plug, because 2.0 uses 5 pins and 3.0 uses 10pins. You can however connect a male MicroB 2.0 connector into a 3.0 female connector, because the shape of the 5 pins is the same on both.

Most older phones use MicroB2.0 plugs, while some may have 3.0, but in those cases you can use the MicroB2.0 male plug, but the speed will be limited to 2.0.

Newer phones use USB-C and the speed can be anything really...

So if you want to have also MicroB3.0 full support, then you will need 3 dongles or an adapter for the USB-C cable:
1. MicroUSB-B2.0 male -> USB-A female (black center with 5 pins)
2. MicroUSB-B3.0 male -> USB-A female (usually blue center with 10pins)
or
MicroUSB-B3.0 male -> USB-C male adapter (to be used with the USB-C dongle)
3. USB-C3.0+ male -> USB-A female (also usually blue center with 10pins)

Hope this helps.

i do not know, how to search for this kind of adapter in online stores
You could try searching for "USB 2-in-1 cables", and specify the connectors you are looking for. I tried with "2-in-1 USB C/Micro to USB Adapter" on a web search, and got results:

But, if you search for "USB c, b, a adapter" it does not get the right kind of results, it would seem.

I agree with iko22 but you really do need to define your requirements.
That's what I was hoping to help you do with my earlier posts.
- I have never seen a USB-A connector on a phone.
- I have never seen a USB Micro-B [USB 3] connector on a phone.

There is nothing complicated about what you want to do.
You can just buy two cables.
- You might prefer two adapters instead.
- You might prefer one cable & one adapter instead.
Your choices will become clear to you when you have checked your phones to see what connectors they have - some will have USB Micro-B & some will have USB-C.

Your USB-C cable is wrong. The USB-A end is female. It needs to be male.
Do you have any phones with the connector on your other choice?

Yes.
www.amazon.in/gp/product/B07ZGP5FVP
The fact that it is stated as being female in the product name is also a bit of a clue.

I believe that I'm supposed to add one of those little face things after the word yes but I don't particularly like them.
It's supposed to be USB-C male to USB-A female if it's going to be used in phones for Thumb drives...it's the correct cable. I have several of these at home

Sorry, talking at cross-purposes.
I was thinking about plugging it into the computer connector and completely forgot about the context of the discussion.

Hi, slic, I thought both products are incompatible. Saw your post and glad at least one product selection, c type is correct. I checked it as it arrived only today.Thanks. Could you recommend a compatible one for moto g9. I also find that moto g32 even though a latest edition, is not compatible with the ctype otg cable. I think the latest phones support ctype and usb A types.
why
