Windows 11 HP Desktop AMD 2021 Model # S01-aF0134z. The BIOS has failed. I am using a secondary PC to create a HP BIOS USB Recovery stick, but it is not working. I downloaded the BIOS update .exe file from HP website, using the serial number of the HP Desktop. When I open the .exe file, the secondary PC freezes everytime; this happens on 3 different secondary PCs I have tried it on.

I understand from several websites that to use the BIOS USB Recovery stick, I put it into the HP Desktop with the corrupted BIOS, hold Win Key, B, and Power button for 3 seconds, let go of power, hold Win Key, B, until BIOS Recovery screen appears. The problem is I cannot get to doing that until I have created the BIOS USB Recovery stick. How can I create the stick, when the HP BIOS .exe file does not work? Thanks.

Some HP computers have a menu in the BIOS to restore to an older version or to upgrade.

Boot to the BIOS and see if there are any menu options.

Open Official HP® Desktop Drivers and Software Download > enter the serial number > post a URL or link into this thread

Search the owners manual to see if there is any information on resetting the BIOS.

Some of these HP links are for notebooks but may be useful for the desktop:

The exe you downloaded might be corrupt. Have you got a link to it ?

I have pressed
F9 BOOT
F10 BIOS
F11 RECOVERY
ESC - Boot LIST

none of them do anything, I am using a wired keyboard, it is plugged in. I know that it is plugged and in working because no matter what I do or don't do, after 30 seconds, the screen will display the HP BIOS Update failed screen, and it will give me 15 seconds, if I press Ctl Alt Del, it will respond and restart instantly, so the keyboard is not the problem.

Last week, a glitch started when I restart PC, it would do all the shutdown, but then it would be a black screen, I could hold power button to shut off. I would have to do that everytime, it would never fully shutdown, but it would get almost there, 99% shutdown, black screen. It was not a monitor issue, or a cable issue. To troubleshoot this black screen issue, I went to Settings > Update > HP Firmware BIOS update > restart PC > HP Firmware BIOS update was performed, but it failed, possibly because it could not fully shutdown, I don't know the cause or reason why it failed.

I have already watched the HP BIOS USB Recovery creation video, linked above, multiple times.

I downloaded the HP BIOS USB Recovery .exe multiple times, and had the same effect of freezing any PC I put it on, win10, win11, even winPE. All the same. I follow instructions in the HP BIOS USB Recovery video, but it freezes whole PC. I tried it on multple manufacturer brands too, including secondary HP PC.

The manual for this Desktop has no instructions for BIOS Reset. I have performed the jumper reset on motherboard, and after that, I removed the CMOS battery for 5 minutes, reinserted, had no effect.

In the past, on a different HP PC, I had seen a Windows Update > HP Firmware BIOS update > restart PC > BIOS Update failed > BIOS self recovery successfull. Why didn't that happen here? The BIOS appeard to be corrupted, and does not self recover. Don't they design these to self-recover?

Thank you.

  • Turn off the computer and be sure that the AC adapter is connected to power.
  • Press and hold the Windows + B keys, and then simultaneously press the power button.
After 2 to 3 seconds, continue to press and hold the Windows + B keys, but release the power button. You might hear a series of beeps.
    • If the HP BIOS Update screen is not displayed, repeat the previous steps but press the Windows + V keys
Have you tried the keyboard method above ?

It is different from what you posted:

F11 RECOVERY

For this computer the HP website displayed 3 BIOS versions (35, 32, 31) seen using Windows 11 and 5 BIOS versions seen using Windows 10 (35, 32, 31, 21, 20, 11).

There was a fix for a BIOS problem:

Code:
Version: F.32 Rev.A

Fixed in this release: - Fixes issue where the message

"The BIOS recovery files cannot found... are corrupted." pops up when doing a BIOS Recovery without BIOS BIN and SIG File.

1. Updates eModule to 21C2A5R00Y21W33.1.
2. Sets VT default as Enable.
3. Updates EC to 61.14 due to Fan Curve incorrect. The wrong temp. setting in 1800rpm.
4. Updates HP Basic Diag to 2.2.8.0. 5.
Adds update for Extend an EV_EFI_ACTION event into PCR[7] when IOMMU DMAr is disabled.

What was the BIOS version that was installed and what was the version used for the attempted recovery?

When I download and run the relevant BIOS utility on my Windows 11 Home system, I get the following. Wondering if anyone gets something else.

Clicking next gives the option to extract the bios file to any folder . It can then be copied to a fat32 usb stick.

Solved issue by going to the USB Bios Recovery file downloaded from HP website, and right click > Run As Admin. Stick worked well on corrupted PC after that. Do they tell people to do that step on their website? I don't remember seeing that anywhere in the official documentation.
