I think the repair would cost more than the Laptop is actually worth. But I do plan on asking around. Like I said, I have the tools/stuff but I did more damage than I originally thought, pulling off some of the contacts.
I don’t like waste, especially with computers/parts and the BIO hazards etc

I feel the same but I do know that there will be a time that I have too. When I first started working in public works, everything went into the landfill. Now they recycle as much as they can. The process of recycling electronics is still bad for the environment but IMO, it's better than going into a landfill. The one thing I think is wrong with the recycling program is that it's now co-mingled. Bottles of all colors, cans (tin and aluminum), news papers and cardboard are all mixed together. IMO, more materials were processed for recycling when everything was separated. It has to take to much time and effort to sort the very large amounts of material being recycled. I wouldn't be surprised if most of it winds up in a landfill.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Going by a news report I saw a few years ago, most if not all of the recycle material in the US was being sent to China. China started complaining about all the trash that was mixed in with the recycle and was talking about not accepting it any more. That's all I heard so I don't know if our recycles still go to China or not.

I always save the drive and RAM [except those soldered onto the motherboard], usually can use it other machines to upgrade their RAM and put the drive in a USB case for portable storage.

I'm bad at soldering too. Even though I finally got the notebook motherboard standoff soldered back on but it does not look clean. I also could not get the solder braid to work despite trying different ones from Radio Shack to others, it's not melting the solder and I watched Youtube videos too.

When that happens, apparently the best solution is to drop a little clean solder onto the old solder then use the braid to pick it all up.

Yes, it's the flux in the new solder that makes it able to wet the braid and start soaking it all up.
(speaking from experience, electronics engineer for the first half of my working life).

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

Tried that and it doesn't work, the solder will melt only for like 1/4 of a second... I'll have to practice trying to do it some other time.

Basically this is how I put back the standoff, not the best job but better than the conductive glue they used as it's for grounding it seems. Had to use a toothpick so the solder doesn't fill the screw hole.

I actually put Caig Flux and all it did was filled the hole with a black solid... LOL I think I had it at 380C, hopefully that is hot enough.

This is the video I watched last week which prompted me to mention it. Watch the first 2min where he does a clean removal of the solder.

If you are attempting to solder that stand-off you may need a bigger tip on the iron for heat capacity. There will be a ground plane on that PCB that acts like a heat sink, the solder melts when you apply the iron then cools rapidly.

The stand-off actually is soldered already, I was trying to get rid of the solder I melted on the pad and the desoldering braid didn't work even at 368C. It fell off originally and it appeared to be glued on. This was what it looked like a few months ago and soldering seemed like the faster and more reliable way than waiting 24 hours for the conductive epoxy to cure.

I was using the Hakko FX-888D - HAKKO | HAKKO Corporation and bought all the tips that are available from Hakko so my question was more about using desoldering braids in general as I tried it on actual circuit boards and I could not get the solder to melt when the tip of the iron was on top of the desoldering braid and the braid was on top of the solder even after 5 minutes unless I am placing the iron at the wrong place. All videos I have seen including what @antspants posted always shows the solder melting within a few seconds.

Yes, and that's where it doesn't work for me. In all videos, notice how fast the solder melts and gone within 2 seconds after the iron is on top of the braid. I have it on for like 5 minutes and the solder was still hard as a rock but the solder melts fine without the braid instantly.

You're gonna need a higher wattage soldering iron. Absolute minimum 60W.
You won't need to turn it all the way up, but it's nice to have the extra, when needed.

If the wattage is too low... it'll take forever and when you solder... you'll get "cold" solder joints, which ADD resistance.


Note: Google doesn't agree, but then Google probably didn't spend 7 years as an electronics tech.
