Virtualization Install Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) in Windows 11

  • Staff
WSA_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to install Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) feature in Windows 11.

Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) enables your Windows 11 device to run Android apps available from the Amazon Appstore.

Windows Subsystem for Android is only available in countries and regions that support Amazon AppStore on Windows. Your device also must meet specific Windows 11 requirements for WSA.
  • An Amazon account is required to download mobile apps from the Amazon Appstore.
  • 8 GB (min) or 16 GB (recommended) RAM
  • Solid-state drive (SSD)
  • You may need to enable CPU virtualization in your PC’s BIOS/UEFI.

Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) is being deprecated beginning March 5, 2025

References:

EXAMPLE: Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) settings

You will be able to open WSA settings from Start menu > All Apps > Windows Subsystem for Android after WSA has been installed.

Here's How:

1 Enable the Virtual Machine Platform optional feature. (see screenshots below)

You must be signed in as an administrator to add the Virtual Machine Platform feature.

2 Open the Amazon Appstore app page in the Microsoft Store, and click/tap on Install. (see screenshot below)

This will also automatically install Windows Subsystem for Android on your Windows 11 device.

3 Perform the following steps: (see screenshot below)
  1. Check or uncheck Help improve Microsoft Products by sending optional diagnostic date including usage and error reporting data. for what you want.
  2. Click/tap on Download.

4 When the app has finished installing, click/tap on Open Amazon Appstore. (see screenshot below)

5 If prompted "Let Windows Subsystem for Android access your Microphone", click/tap on Yes or No for what you want. (see screenshot below)

Amazon_Appstore-3.png

6 When the Amazon Appstore opens, click/tap on Already an Amazon customer? Sign in to sign in to the Amazon Appstore with your Amazon account. (see screenshot below)

If the Amazon Appstore app doesn't open, then restart the computer, and try opening the Amazon Appstore app again from the Start menu > All Apps.

If you do not have an Amazon account, you can click/tap on Create a new Amazon account instead to create one.

7 Sign in to your Amazon account. (see screenshots below)

8 You can now select Android apps to install from the Amazon Appstore. These installed Android apps will appear in your Start menu > All apps list like any other installed app. (see screenshot below)

That's it,

How much bl**dy longer before this is available outside US. It has been months now.

MS purports to be a global organisation, and then is so parochial at times (remember the stupidly name Fall Creator update - 95% of world uses Autumn, and 50% of world, it is Spring when Autumn in rest of world - LOL.

There is absolutely no justification in not making this available to rest of world after something like 8 months!

I installed it by changing region but issue is with amazon appstore only working in US. You need to use a vpn to overcome amazon geographic restriction. Until I try that, I do not know if I can use an Amazon.co.uk account - it does not work if I login at moment.

I've had a US amazon account for years, I probably used a VPN or similar to set it up at the time, Opera browsers VPN gives an American location if you don't already have a VPN you could use.

How do you set up a US Amazon account - I just get redirected to UK - Do I need to use a vpn? I have NordVPN.
set Nordvpn on the server selection screen to US and it should work fine - note enable "tunneling" so things like access to your local HDD's etc and email still work !!!! i.e exclude apps like file explorer, outlook etc from being "Vpn'd".

That's a great feature in NORDVPN and other VPN's should have that function where you can exclude specific apps from coming under the scope of the VPN.

I have Nordvpn -- great also on Amazon fire stick or to watch UK "Premier Footie" on Sat afternoons at 15.00 when those matches are " geoblocked" in UK and I'm on a work gig there. !!

For decent Netflix etc -- the "Albanian" servers seems very fast and OK currenly when US servers get overloaded -- how the world changes !!!!.

A few years ago most people wouldn't give Albania the time of day -- works perfectly now !!! (Actually also Tirana great place, cheap --real cheap and friendly people ---shhh!! otherwise tourist hordes will overrun it !). -- NordVPN also installs fine on an Amazon fire stick or similar too.

Good deals also on 2 year contracts on Nordvpn -- never had a problem with quality of service or speed of download -- not much you can do if the actual source site is overloaded but that's not VPN's fault --regularly get downloads of almost 1Gb/s and streaming isn't a problem (usually) either even for 4K UHD movies etc.

Cheers

As a huge fan of android Id do all these things to install it on my windows, however its way to big a deal doing all this stuff just to get android to work on windows. Ill be waiting for it all to be baked in and ready to use immediately without having to install this or that etc..it wont take much longer and this will be the case.

Android and Linux will always be optional and never 'baked in' as you put it, they will require the user to choose to initialize no matter what form that takes, WSL has been like that for years and I see no reason why WSA would be any different.

Sure but android emulators are a PITA as they are not kept upto date with official android versions, they do not play well with hyper-v installed, and just take a lot of space.

PS: Why did you need to put post in bold - that is overkill.

Well. Windows Security is Baked In and yes, they can do it its whether they actually will or not. I'm just saying I would love this capability just like I'm loving being able to use Microsoft's "Phone Link" app to text talk etc. However, me personally am not going to jump a bunch of hoops to get it onto my PC. I do enough of that installing themes via UltraUXthemePatcher and icons via 7tsp installer and Winaero Tweaker to get Windows more to my liking. I am happy this possibility is finally here don't get me wrong. Love alot of things Windows but I may be moving to Linux IF Microsoft takes its giant step toward having users pay to go through a hub in order to use it.

I used to use bluestacks, but after trying LdPlayer id never go back, ultra light ultra fast, works wonders compared to the slow bloated bluestacks.

Sure but android emulators are a PITA as they are not kept upto date with official android versions, they do not play well with hyper-v installed, and just take a lot of space.

PS: Why did you need to put post in bold - that is overkill.
LdPlayer in my opinion is the best...so dont beat me its just MY choice. Ijust had sooo many probs with bluestacks.

I used to use bluestacks, but after trying LdPlayer id never go back, ultra light ultra fast, works wonders compared to the slow bloated bluestacks.
is it only for android games .can android apps be installed as well .
