I suggested the "Windows.old method" to save time taking a backup. Unless you clone the disk to a spare disk or at least create an image of the whole disk, you can never be sure you took a backup of all your data, let alone if you are not an experienced user. With the "Windows.old method" you have all your data until you cleanup the disk.

somewhere in here I made mention of half my taskbar missing horizontally. I have found the fault. In Winaerotweaker there is a specific Win 11 section. In that, the system/software made a switch of changing taskbar size from 'normal' to 'default'. I didnt even know it was there until I spent a goodly hour checking the software out. I found it and read the page then changed it to 'normal' - bingo - fixed.

Thanks for sharing. That's why you avoid messing with tweaks unless you know what you are doing. Even then, you change a setting at a time to detect possible issues.

when I saw normal and default I thought, whats the difference? So Iclicked normal, and it worked.

went to take doggie for walk, came back and desktop had changed to white squares, start would not work and web tried to keep opening in Edge, which I didnt have. After a flying nerd attack I hit the button and did a reset from cloud. It failed. Did a reset from pc and it worked. I now have three (printed off) pages of apps etc to reinstall. Hopefully I'll be back before I croak.

I can relate. In my main PC (see my second system specs) I had Windows 10 64-bit and tons of apps. I cloned the disk to a new SSD and attempted to upgrade to Windows 11. After three failed attempts to upgrade, I gave up and did a clean installation of Windows 11. It took my over a week to reinstall and reconfigure all my apps and games. That's why contrary to many in this forum that are fast to suggest a clean installation, I prefer an upgrade instead. Clean installation takes little time for an average Office PC with a couple of apps, but sounds like a nightmare for us with tons of apps and games to reinstall. Not every case is the same. You have to take into account all the factors: number or apps to reinstall, amount of data to backup, user experience etc. Clean installation is not panacea, I reserve it for really simple systems or as last resort like in my case.

I even had to change the keyboard, it didnt equate even though it was set on English UK. Lickily I had invested £13 on Ebay for a Microsoft Multimedia 1.0a keyboard which arrived yesterday. I had three of these over the years but they finally gave up and I threw them out last week. Now I have Win 11 running almost smoothly. Still loats of stuff to reload and the damn thing changed an important drive letter, which would not let me change it, the previous letter ID is not in the change to list and it wouldn't allow me to do manual change, so I spent an hour readdressing loads of disk stuff to the new letter. I printed off 3 whole pages of lists of what was UNinstalled during the reset. Some like MS Visuals will go back in by themselves I suppose, as will framworks. All updates have gone back in without a hitch. There are a couple of cosmetic changes I want, like colours on the top bar of web pages, I dont like it too light. At present they are a milky creamy sort of white.

If the drive letter is not available, some other device has taken it. First change the other device to something else to release the drive letter and then assign it to the disk you want. For the colors, the default theme is light which makes the taskbar almost white and the icons black. Change it to custom and then change Windows to dark. Now you can set the color you like.

there is no other drive. I checked the pc, then the prog to change drive letters, it seems not to exist Using FF I told it to add a theme, its good now and easy to read.

Right-click This PC, then select Manage to open Computer Management. Go to Disk Manager, see the devices. One of them must have taken the desired drive letter. Change it to another drive letter to release it. Now you can assign it to the desired drive.

yeah, that the route I took, I did it again to make sure its not me, and there is no 'I' disk listed which was the one I was on; its now N. Because of that I went into the properties and changed all 'I' to 'N' - so I'll leave it, not all THAT important but a damn nuisance anyway.

Why didn't you just change N for I? If there is no other device using this drive letter, it should be on the list to select it. Maybe you have mounted a network location and the drive letter wasn't available? Sounds weird.

it would not let me, it would only switch to a listed alternative, and It was not there. It also refused to let me do it manually

You open Disk Manager, right-click on the drive, Change drive letter and you should see a list. If I isn't available it means some other device or network location has deserved it.

Just FYI, but I'm still using Web Expression 4 for basic CSS coding and FTP uploads to my Website and that works without issue. Nothing freezes when clicked or opened...

Not doing any extensive work with it though, just some basic CSS coding and FTP uploads. But yes the app has long been discontinued.

Since Windows 8, even if you turn off User Account Control, all programs run with standard rights for security reasons, while in Windows Vista and 7 disabling UAC would automatically run anything as Administrator. In Windows 8, 10 and 11 you must explicitly right-click and Run as Administrator to give the installer full access rights and avoid any incompatibilities. Also some applications don't run properly or at all with standard rights. You have to set these to always Run as Administrator in Properties, Compatibility. I always set the target application to Run as Administrator for all users, not only my account, just in case. I suggest to completely uninstall Web Expression 4, restart and then re-install as Administrator. Then set the application shortcut to always run as Administrator for all users. This might fix your issues.

Hi Dru - I still need to run Expression 4 but not had a chance of late due to other issues. But now I have my images back, instead of logos, I can get back to work on my new website (old but renamed). I am sure it will be ok. I am a born pessimist, that way I am never disappointed, but I believe win 11 will ,eventually, come as good, or better, than my win 10 was.

Spabakons: Ref uninstall, reinstal, OK, I wil look at that too. But I am actually admin. I'll have a look later on today.
