They can't. Upgrade fails using windows update for some (the ones that are offered it), others not. Inplace upgrade using iso fails for some, others not. I had to do a clean install to get 24h2. For systems actually running 24h2, some work great, others have issues of various sorts. There's no rhyme or reason to any of it.

I totally agree but believe to some degree it is still very underrated.
It’s a one stop shop for many things. It isn’t only for unsupported hardware, it is at its essence, a Media Creation Tool.

The only thing RUFUS can’t currently do is block updates on a clean install. If it had this it would be a bonus.

Apparently the new install system for 24H2 clean installs, calls on Microsoft for any updates during the install process. So if you’re using ISO build .1742 for a clean install, you will on boot to Windows most likely have build .2314 (or the most current version update)

Having RUFUS block this from happening would be a great asset.

If I had business clients clients asking me if they should force the update I would answer definitely not. That is my answer.

So many variations - status of existing system, existing hardware, user knowledge and experience, and so on. Point them to forums such as this, by all means, let/make them do their own research but really, you're backing yourself into a corner by giving direct advice (which can easily be misunderstood or misinterpreted)

Sometimes Microsoft or the end-user installs the update without realizing what they did. If it is within the first 10 days, I let it fallback to 23H2. Lately if I don't see a problem, I keep 24H2 on the system.

In a few or so years, I will hopefully retire from the IT industry. For many years (or decades now), we always rely on reading messages in a variety of forums, news articles, etc., to always help us see the good vs bad of it all and then figure out how to correct the problems with whatever we are trying to fix.

Look for GE24H2

In the right pane look for GatedBlockId

Will say None if no holds on your system.

If there is a number there you can check it against the listed known issues

For example on that page the "Some ASUS devices might fail to install Windows 11, version 24H2" has safeguard id 54157480

Also check that these two say green and not orange or red.

You can tell Windows Update to get 24H2 straight away by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2. I've done that on one of my supported devices. On the basis of what I've seen so far I'm going to wait for it to be offered to the rest, and hope that MS have ironed out some of the bugs by then.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

In a few or so years, I will hopefully retire from the IT industry. For many years (or decades now), we always rely on reading messages in a variety of forums, news articles, etc., to always help us see the good vs bad of it all and then figure out how to correct the problems with whatever we are trying to fix.

I usually follow the advice there and not rush to the 24H2 upgrade until MS works a bunch of the problems out (which will take several months).
might consider updating to 24H2 sometime in Q2 2025 or so
