Is WinAero Tweaker safe?

I'm new to Windows 11; I've been reading about the personalization tool Winaero Tweaker. It looks like a powerful -- and incredibly useful -- tool to customize the Windows 11 user interface. But I haven't dared to download it yet.

• Is Winaero Tweaker safe?
• Does anyone know if the changes that Winaero Tweaker makes to the registry are documented, so that I can revert to the original registry values if something goes wrong?
• Is there some way I can prevent Winaero Tweaker from accessing the internet? (In the Winaero Tweaker FAQ, the author states, "It [the app] does nothing except check for updates. You can disable it from the Tools -> Preferences menu. Thereafter, Winaero Tweaker will not connect to the Internet." Is there some way to guarantee this at the operating system level? Perhaps I could follow the directions here: "How to Block a Program from Accessing the Internet Windows 11"?)
• I'm running Windows 11, 23H2, 22631.3447. I have seen YouTube videos (for example, here and here) alleging that future Windows 11 releases/builds (namely, 24H2) will block access to environment variables used by programs such as StartAllBack and ExplorerPatcher (or, rather, that Windows Update will prevent users using such customization software from upgrading to 24H2). Does anyone have any idea whether Winaero Tweaker will be blocked by these changes?

I can't answer that question because I don't use it but it seems safe enough, many members here do use that software, but bear in mind, that it may make unsupported changes which could either break or conflict with Windows updates. It would be a good idea to create a image backup before you try it, or better yet install it in a VM and see if you like it or not.

I would use something like RegShot, take a snapshot before and after installation and when you've made a few changes using it.

That article should work as long as you block the ports it's using, you might need to install something like Wireshark to see what its doing.

I'm not sure but that is a realistic risk which could happen.

In every Tweek it is show what it does and you can revert back.

I've used it for years and most tweaks work fine. Heads up, I just discovered on the latest Beta and PR builds you can't use it to change the system font though. It will break the search function on the start menu and taskbar.

1. Yes - as of the time of this writing
2. Yes, they are documented in the program with a link to how it works as @Josey Wales has shown.
3. You can block it in windows firewall or another firewall software. However, keeping it up to date is important
4. That is unknown as of yet

Keep in mind, I would suggest looking into the tutorials section here, (here is an example) most things can be done by using our tutorial section without the need for installing a program as well as offering an easy way to undo.

Besides that, you can download and install Classic 7 Games and Wordpad.

If they blocked it, they would have to block the Tweaks available here as well, plus a great deal of Github.

and they wouldn't be able to block the reg keys changes really, as that would require an extensive rewrite most likely. So even if the app was blocked the reg method wouldnt be.

I know, but there are hundreds of applications out there for the sole purpose of Tweaking Windows, Tweaks are just on one site.

I don’t personally believe there is any conspiricy in regards to what Microsoft is currently blocking and what it isn’t. Perhaps Winareo isn’t a windows shell hack as are some other apps.

There is also Ultimate Windows Tweaker 5 for Windows 11 and from memory it doesn't actually install, it runs like a portable?

1. Yes Winaero Tweaker is safe.
2. You can go to File > Export tweaks... and that wizard will show you a,list of all the tweaks you made with Winaero.
3. In Tools > Settings you can UNcheck "Check for updates automatically". That's all that will access the internet in Winaero.
4. There's no way to know if Winaero will be blocked by 24H2 or not.


99% of the tweaks in Winaero are just registry edits. They can be done with or without Winaero.

Every tweak in Winaero has a link (on the right side), that will take you to the Winaero site, and explain how to do the tweaks manually (without Winaero).

I install WinAeroTweaker as a portable app and have had no problems with it.

As Ghot said, 99% of the tweaks in Winaero Tweaker are just registry edits.
Most of these edits are detailed in Brink's tutorials and on many other websites.

Yes, exactly. I've also made that point several times - all Tweaker does is assemble the reg edits in a simple UI for ease of application. The underlying O/S mechanics are always there.

It's quite bewildering to read from some commentators the notion that it's some backhanded code modifier. I've used Tweaker for over 15 years because it has assembled the reg edits into a useable coherent whole.

I particularly value the font change capability, even though, annoyingly, that has to be done one step at a time with a sign off/back in step. Tweaker's author says that MS does not have a regedit available to cumulatively store font changes then apply all changes at the same time.

And why would MS "block" Tweaker when it almost exclusively comprises a list of MS own regedit tweaks ?
