Yes, my Matebook X Pro only has 8 gigs of ram, and it is soldered to the motherboard. I must have overlooked that when I purchased it. My Acer that I just purchased will be upgraded to windows 11 sooner or later is ram upgradeable.

I do recycle except the hard drives. They are wiped and put in my safe.

That's a good idea - a safe. I never did know quite where to put my old hard drives. They are just kind of lying around the place lol

I take mine apart ....disks make good coasters and the magnets are powerful for a great many things.

Maybe a cutting torch. You're probably right about the toxic fumes though. The electric magnets they use in scrap yards to lift heavy metal such as cars might be strong enough to secure erase the drives. That's just a guess so I don't know if that would work. What one needs to do is destroy the metal platters inside the drive. That's why I use a drill or drill press to drill a hole through them. Unless one is trying to hide evidence from the law that should be good enough. Back in the day when I wanted to discard old CDs and DVDs, I would take a screw driver and scratch the heck out of the data side of the disk.

For some reason, folks around here think I want all their old discarded computers so I ended up with huge boxes of parts I've accumulated over the years. This town has no place for recycling but I discovered that Goodwill will take them even if they are in pieces. They have some kind of centralized recycling center they truck them to. But my husband is my best recycler. He reloads his own ammo and uses old PC cases to store ammo, powder, etc. He loves to use the old hard drives for target practice. He's become a pack rat in his old age and won't throw anything away if he can figure out a way to shoot it. I just leave him to it.

Lol. Great idea using them as target practice. I asked my teenage stepson to smash one with a sledge hammer recently- I got the “you’re weird” look. When younger he’d have been excited at the idea of smashing something

Good Will is a great place to take them to for recycling. If they are usable, they wipe them (even though you probably already did wipe them) and resell. If not, they do have a recycle center that they are sent to. I knew a guy that worked the computer section for Goodwill some 25 years ago. They have been recycling them for a long time.

When your husband shoots a HDD dose all of the platters inside get damaged enough so they can't be read?

HDDs are much harder to destroy then you would think.
